Job Summary
Manages the design, implementation, optimization, administration, and technical documentation of all wireless services and systems. Leads the resolution of complex technical issues promptly, delivering best-in-class wireless service support across the university. Manages and provides day-to-day network engineering and technical support for wireless network infrastructure. Ensures systems operate at peak efficiency with little to no downtime. Ensures that all networking activities are aligned with industry best practices as well as IT and UCSF policies, processes, and procedures. Provides technical and training assistance to other IT and Clinical Technology teams.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% – 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.
For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description
The Sr. Wireless Engineer will report to the Associate Director, Wired and Wireless who serves as the senior technical leader for the network services team at UCSF. The Sr. Wireless Engineer is responsible for the physical design, documentation, and implementation of all network wireless services under the wired and wireless portfolio.
Ensures IT meets both the current and future network service needs of a broad range of customers, partners, and key stakeholders in administrative and academic units. Guides a team of engineers to drive innovative solutions, ensuring the delivery of best-in-class service to UCSF. Directs strategic and operational planning to achieve business goals, prioritizing initiatives and coordinating the evaluation, deployment, and management of current and future IT systems across the organization. Ensures flexible, efficient, and reliable systems can adjust to future demands consistent with the health and campus growth and vision.
The IT Network Services department is comprised of Network Security, Network Field Services, Network Wired and Wireless Services, and Network Infrastructure Services. We are one of a few organizations within the Academic Healthcare space with an IT Network Organization that supports clinical, research, and academic environments. Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
- ACMP (Aruba Certified Mobility Professional)
- ACCP (Aruba Certified ClearPass Professional)
- Extensive experience with 802.11a/b/g/n/ac and RF design and WLAN fundamentals
- Experience with Aruba Wireless and ClearPass NAC, and solid knowledge of server and virtual technologies.
- Experience in IT, network engineering, and/or wireless networks
- Extensive experience managing and documenting wireless networks, overlaying APs onto CAD (or similar) blueprints for heat mapping
- Extensive experience designing, deploying, and troubleshooting IP and wireless networks
- Demonstrated ability to perform advanced troubleshooting including packet analyzers for both wired and wireless networks supporting security measures, multicast, dynamic routing, and load balancing.
- Demonstrated knowledge of LAN/WAN and network protocols, monitoring tools, and commands, ensuring quick issue resolutions.
- Extensive experience troubleshooting large-scale wireless networks, including client experience tests and wireless packet analyses.
- Extensive experience designing and operating large-scale wireless networks, including controller clustering, failover methods, and caveats, group management, AP modes of operation, patching, RF management, and similar tasks. Extensive experience with wireless optimizations, including AP placement, achieving ideal signal levels, optimized roaming, spectrum selection, channel tuning, cell optimization, QoS, power AP tunneling versus local switching.
- Experience managing support cases with external technology vendors and performing active and passive wireless site surveys.
- Proven ability to develop positive working relationships and strong rapport with team members.
- In-depth, advanced understanding of various network hardware platforms.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, with demonstrated discipline in recognizing and handling confidential and sensitive information.
- Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines. Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Participate in Network on-call rotation supporting a 24/7 environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced level of understanding of modern enterprise TCP/IP networks using standards and technologies including but not limited to: OSPF, BGP, STP, RSTP, 802.1Q, Multicast, VRF-lite, QoS and IPSEC
- Cisco CCNP or equivalent
- ITIL v4 Certification
