    THIS POSITION IS LOCATED IN TULARE, CA
    Under supervision of the pathologist, perform necropsies and provide technical assistance in the Pathology Section. Maintain and clean necropsy facilities, and provide general and technical assistance in other diagnostic service sections of the laboratory.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    • Stoop, bend and lift supplies and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
    • Assist in the handling, restraint and disposal of domestic livestock.
    • Tolerate strong odors and the sight of exposed animal tissues and blood products
    • Push, pull and manipulate carcasses for necropsy.
    • Stand for extended periods of time.
    • Kneel, squat, stoop and bend.
    • Ability to perform repetitive motions such as pipetting and cutting tissues.
    • Sit/work at a computer/workstation for extended periods of time.
    • Ability to distinguish between colors.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT

    • Due to the nature of the essential responsibilities, this position is not eligible for remote work.

    • This position is subject to UCD’s vaccination program (Influenza, SARS-CoV-2, is/might subject to prophylactic vaccination for rabies), and Medical/Health Surveillance Program/Procedures/Review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.

    • Work Schedule: Monday – Friday; 8:00am – 5:00pm (Work schedule might be slightly different during the training period)

    • Work flexible schedule/overtime as needed to complete projects and meet deadlines.

    • Mandatory weekend and holiday rotation.

    • Restricted/Limited vacation during peak workload periods (i.e. Outbreaks, Fiscal Close, Audits Periods, etc.)

    • Occasional travel to CAHFS branch laboratories, conferences, etc.

    • THIS IS NOT AN H1B/J1 OPPORTUNITY. Candidate must be legally permitted to work in the United States and not subject to revocation.

    • This is not a research position. The position is located in a diagnostic laboratory where quality control and assurance as well as meticulous working habits are essential.

    • Per the terms and agreements of the department’s contracts and grants, the position requires signing of a Confidentiality Agreement or Non-Disclosure Agreement regarding testing and client information.

    • Upon completion of a background check and appropriate training, must participate in the select agent program.

    • Ability to complete Select Agent background clearance procedures.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    Minimum Education/Experience:

    • Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Science or similar or Registered Veterinary Technician, or equivalent combination of education and applied experience in technical aspects of necropsy including euthanasia, tissue/specimen collection, identification of normal vs. abnormal anatomy, and sterile techniques.

    • Experience providing excellent customer service and having interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with a wide variety of clients, co-workers, and other individuals in person, in writing, and over the phone.

    Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

    • Knowledge and skills to interview clients to obtain clinical histories of animals and to maintain confidentiality of information.

    • Knowledge of avian & mammalian anatomy and skills to assist with necropsies

    • Computer skills to rapidly & accurately perform data entry and retrieval of data, and to utilize software programs such as Word, Excel, and laboratory information management systems.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
    Preferred Education/Experience:

    • Experience working in a veterinary diagnostic laboratory and/or laboratory animal care experience.

    • Experience with quality control procedures in a diagnostic laboratory including maintaining accurate inventory and quality control records, complying with requirements, and reporting quality problems, as well as knowledge of quality control and quality assurance methods in a diagnostic laboratory that utilizes complex methodologies.

    Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

    • Knowledge of safe working practices and laboratory/University safety protocols to include handling and disposal of waste solvents and biologically hazardous materials.

    • General knowledge of and skills in veterinary/medical laboratory diagnostic specimen handling & processing, including knowledge in tissue trimming with skills to grossly identify fixed tissues.
