Area of expertise:

Vaccine Preventable Disease Surveillance Officer under Special Services Agreement (SSA)

Purpose of SSA

To support Manager, Health Security & Emergencies Branch (HSEB) Disease Control Division (DCD), National Public Health Wing the National Department of Health (NDoH) on:
•  Improvement and development of policies, strategies, integration, stakeholder participation
•  Enhancing surveillance and preparedness for Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPDs) with support from stakeholders and across sector
•  Designing and developing surveillance reporting and monitoring tools
•  Maintenance of VPD surveillance data management, and prepare feedback reports

Background

Routine immunization performance in Papua New Guinea is significantly low over the past many years and resulting an increased risk of resurgence of VPD outbreaks. The NDoH has recognized that the enhancing laboratory based VPD surveillance is a priority for timely detection and response to the outbreaks.

Deliverables

•  Standard operating procedures for VPD Surveillance are updated / newly developed
•  VPD surveillance and monitoring tools are updated/ newly developed
•  VPD surveillance data are available for VPD national expert committee reviews
•  Monthly VPD surveillance summary compilation reports are available
•  National and provincial stakeholders are efficiently and effectively coordinated to enhance VPD surveillance and response

Qualifications, experience, skills and languages

Educational Qualifications:

Essential: University degree or Diploma in health sciences, public health or equivalent
Desirable: Having followed Field Epidemiology Training

Experience

Essential: 1-2 years work experience in public health
Desirable: Any work experience in VPD surveillance

Skills/Knowledge:

Essential: Knowledge on disease surveillance and response. Skills on public health data management; promote coordination across stakeholders and; good communication skills
Desirable: Knowledge and skills in public health programme planning and evaluation

Languages and level required:

Essential: Expert Knowledge in English

Location

National Department of Health, Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea

Travel

The SSA is expected to travel within the country to support provincial teams

Remuneration and budget (travel costs are excluded):

Remuneration: 5964 PGK/month

Expected duration of contract: 11 months

where a medical condition does not allow such vaccination, as certified by the WHO Staff Health and Wellbeing Services (SHW). The successful candidate will be asked to provide
relevant evidence related to this condition.  A copy of the updated vaccination card must be shared with WHO medical service in the medical clearance process. Please note that certain
countries require proof of specific vaccinations for entry or exit. For example, official proof /certification of yellow fever vaccination is required to enter many countries. Country-specific
