Founded in 1998 by three chefs, Second Helpings remains true to its core mission while the ability to serve our community has continued to grow. Last year, we rescued 3.4 million pounds of food and distributed over 1.1 million meals through our 100 area partners.

The Second Helpings building is a vibrant and active one, fostering a collaborative work environment. The organization relies on a steady and dedicated volunteer corps that is in the building during most operating hours, and it sees culinary job training students and graduates coming and going regularly. Food and food culture are ever-present, and lunch is available on most days.

Overview

This position encompasses a wide range of accounting duties with an understanding of processes and documents necessary to produce financial statements for reporting. Responsible for maintaining financial records and assisting with audits and budgeting processes. Assist CFO/COO as needed to respond to information requests by the staff, Board of Directors, and committees.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Conduct month-end and year-end closures including journal entry preparation, analyses, and account reconciliations with strong attention to detail
  • Prepare internal financial statements
  • Serve as backup on payroll process in the absence of the Human Resources Manager
  • Manage process for tracking food donations and distributions
  • Track fixed assets
  • Review reconciled bank and credit card statements and resolve issues
  • Contribute to the development and review of annual operating budget
  • Maintain financial reports, records, and general ledger accounts
  • Work with the Development team to ensure consistent reporting of revenue
  • Respond to information requests
  • Prepare budgets and invoices for grant requests and reporting.
  • Prepare documents for audits and 990 preparation
  • Assist the CFO/COO as needed

Requirements

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance required.
  • 3+ years of accounting experience.
  • Working knowledge of GAAP.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite particularly with Excel
  • Proficient with QuickBooks preferred
  • Proficient with Salesforce preferred

  • Must be highly dependable and responsible.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must have excellent organizational skills and keep neat, accurate records.
  • Must have ability to handle multiple priorities.
  • Must be able to work independently and under pressure.
  • Must have ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Must be able to work well with people of all backgrounds, cultural groups and economic levels.
  • Must have strong numeracy and analytical skills.
  • Must have good problem-solving and time management skills.
  • Must be highly organized and detail oriented.
