Definition of Class

Student Disability Services at the University of Mississippi invites applications for a full-time, benefitted Staff Interpreter position.  This position facilitates communication access by providing sign language interpreting for Deaf and hard of hearing students, faculty, staff, and/or visitors, delivered primarily in the classroom or other university settings.  This position will also provide administrative assistance for the department, including testing services, text conversion, and notetaking.

Examples of Work Performed

  • Provide sign language interpreting and transliterating services as assigned for university classes, lectures, meetings, and other university sponsored events/ activities
  • Actively monitor students and/or other Deaf consumers while interpreting for comprehension and feedback
  • Collaborate with other interpreting staff to complete projects
  • Use independent judgment to resolve problems and ensure proper communication access
  • Review course information to learn vocabulary, technical terminology, concepts to be covered, and the instructor’s teaching methods
  • Read and analyze course textbooks, course materials, articles, and other pertinent information prior to class
  • Collaborate with multiple stakeholders to ensure proper communication access
  • Assists with scheduling and dispatching interpreting assignments as needed
  • Participates in Deaf and Hard of Hearing outreach and advocacy activities
  • Provides assistance and coverage for other programs within the department including assisting in the department office, the SDS Testing Center and with text conversion services
  • Performs related or similar duties as required or assigned.

Essential Functions

These essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following. Additional essential functions may be identified and included by the hiring department.

1.    Provide sign language interpreting services
2.    Reviews and analyzes course materials to prepare for specific interpreting assignments
3.    Provides administrative assistance within the department

NOTE:  Occasional evening and weekend work may be required.

Minimum Education/Experience

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in a related field

AND

Experience: 

1 year of experience related to the duties described above

AND

Certification:

Must hold current certification as an interpreter, either through QA or RID, or other certification recognized by the State of Mississippi. Must be registered or eligible for registration with the Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services Office for Deaf and Hard of Hearing within 30 days from date of hire

Substitution Statement:
Related experience may be substituted for education on a basis set forth and approved by the Department of Human Resources.
