This position is a 100% limited position with the possibility of extension/career conversion.

Under general supervision of the Principal Investigator, this position will spearhead a research project spanning three areas of research: highly collaborative NSF MRSEC-funded research on engineered living materials (ELMs), research related to the molecular biology of circadian biology of cyanobacteria, and the molecular biology of newly isolated cyanobacterial strains that are genetically manipulable. The primary duties of this position are to perform independent scientific research leading to publication in leading scientific journals, including experimental design; conducting innovative research in ELMs, the circadian clock of cyanobacteria, and the isolation of new cyanobacterial strains; and preparing manuscripts on the acquired data and results. These primary duties require contributions of original ideas and methods, and application of bioinformatics, statistics, and other methods of data analysis. Secondary duties include various actives required for laboratory functions such as ordering supplies, maintaining equipment, and training student workers. This position is also responsible for training and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in the lab.

  • Extensive demonstrated experience, skill, and knowledge in successfully carrying out independent research in cyanobacterial growth, biology, imaging, molecular biology, and biochemistry.

  • Advanced theoretical and sophisticated practical experimental knowledge of cell biology, genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry and biophysics acquired through a Bachelors degree in related field and an equivalent combination of education and experience. PhD degree in related field preferred.

  • Detailed conceptual/theoretical and practical understanding of and ability to perform cyanobacterial growth, DNA isolation, recombinant DNA procedures, recombinant DNA techniques, PCR, agarose gel electrophoresis, time-lapse microscopy, image analysis, and cyanobacterial cell flow cytometry.

  • Experience culturing and genetically modifying cyanobacteria.

  • Demonstrated experience writing manuscripts based on research projects, including excellent scientific writing & presentation development skills for presenting data to a formal audience.

  • Theoretical and sophisticated practical experimental knowledge of current literature in field of cyanobacterial genetics, systems biology, synthetic biology, and ELMs.

  • Skill and knowledge to conduct research independently, requiring direction but not supervision by the principal investigator.

  • Knowledge of and skill to purchase laboratory materials and supplies, and maintain laboratory equipment and computers including microscopes.

  • Knowledge of laboratory safety requirements and procedures, hazardous materials disposal, and skill to train others in these procedures/requirements. Knowledge/understanding and at least some experience with Safety Data Sheets, hazard communication, and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. Familiarity with a Chemical Hygiene Plan addressing safety precautions including appropriate clothing and shoes, safe handling of chemicals, use of protective items. Willingness and ability to keep safety training current and consistent with research environment.

  • Demonstrated skill to organize, set up, and maintain laboratory notebooks and accurate records.

  • Demonstrated skill to work collaboratively within a dynamic team environment.
