Staff Scientist 1
(Mass Spectrometry-Based Proteomics of Alzheimer’s Disease)
The National Institute on Aging (NIA), Intramural Research Program (IRP), a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), is seeking applications from highly motivated individuals to serve as a Staff Scientist in the Center for Alzheimer’s and Related Dementias (CARD) in Bethesda, MD. CARD is a collaborative initiative between the NIA and National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) that supports basic, translational, and clinical research on Alzheimer’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease related dementias (AD/ADRD). CARD’s central mission is to initiate, stimulate, accelerate, and support research that will lead to the development of improved treatments and preventions for these diseases.
CARD is a highly collaborative research center that aims to be a central hub for collaboration and cooperation. The science performed in CARD is collaborative and team-based in nature and there will be a large number of scientists and research groups working with or at CARD with varied expertise and from around the world. In the initial phase, CARD is focused on understanding biology, anchored in genetics; prediction and prognosis of disease; de-risking targets; and precision therapeutics.
CARD is seeking to recruit an expert in proteomic technologies, including mass spectrometry and the application of high-multiplex, high-throughput proteomic assays including next generation sequencing based proteomics. The successful candidate must be committed to scientific excellence and highly collaborative research and will foster this throughout the development of a group focused on proteomics.
The successful individual must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in Proteomics, Biomedical Sciences, or related fields, with at least 5 years of postdoctoral experience working in a laboratory setting. The successful individual will have had productive postdoctoral experience as evidenced by a record of primary and collaborative authorship in peer-reviewed publications in internationally recognized journals. The incumbent will be an expert in the application and/or development of proteomic methods using varied sources to include blood, plasma, brain, cells, and other tissues. Additionally, the incumbent will be an expert in mass spectrometry applied for the discovery and delineation of disease biology and for use in biomarker identification and development. Experience in the generation, quality control, handling, and analysis of large-scale proteomic data is preferred. Experience in neurodegenerative disease research is essential.
The successful candidate will manage projects and collaborations through project initiation, strategy development, strategic planning, execution, and closeout of phases of projects. The candidate will be responsible for problem-solving and making key decisions to ensure the completion of multiple projects, goals, and competing priorities. A proven track record in establishing and maintaining collaborative relationships is highly desirable. Furthermore, the selected candidate will assist in the management of resources from CARD for funding start-up costs and ongoing program operations, and will be assist with managing budget, personnel, and space relating to proteomics within CARD. The incumbent will have a role in assisting the CARD Director in project prioritization, and in identifying research and development opportunities that fit within the program and mission of CARD.
Staff Scientists do not receive independent resources, although they often work independently and have sophisticated skills and knowledge essential to the work of the Center. Although this Staff Scientist will be supervised by the CARD Senior Scientist, they will be interacting with the scientists from the IRP and scientific community at large.
Salary is commensurate with research experience and accomplishments. A full Civil Service package of benefits (including retirement, health and life insurance, Thrift Savings Plan participation, etc.) is available. To apply: Please send a cover letter, curriculum vitae, bibliography, statement of research interests, and three letters of recommendation to: Aisha McCoy, Intramural Program Specialist; Office of the Scientific Director, National Institute on Aging; Vacancy #CARD-24-02-AM; via email: cardjobs@mail.nih.gov. Applications, including letters of recommendation, must reference Vacancy #CARD-24-02-AM. The first round of reviews is expected to occur on or about March 21, 2024; however, applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
