The starting salary package for this position is £76,028 GBP / approx. $96,615 USD including all allowances

About MAG:

MAG (Mines Advisory Group) is an international humanitarian organisation based in Manchester, UK, and working in 32 countries. We remove landmines and unexploded ordnance to release safe and productive land for communities, and work to reduce the threat of armed violence by supporting governments to safely manage weapons and ammunition. In 1997, MAG was a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for our work campaigning for the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention.

About the role:

You will manage MAG Iraq’s Standards and Training Team and lead on field operation quality management to maintain standards and to drive the continual improvement of our operational processes and procedures. You will manage, develop, and deliver technical training and standards across the programme in all matters relating to field operations, equipment and technical competencies in compliance with MAG Iraq’s Standard Operating Procedures and MAG’s Global Technical Standards. You will also implement a comprehensive Quality Management System across all areas of technical operation to maintain safety, improve standards, and increase our operational efficiency. You will conduct thorough incident and accident investigations, and prepare comprehensive reports in compliance with MAG’s Global Technical Standards. You will work across our Iraq programme including in remote areas and in challenging contexts away from home comforts, but the lifesaving impact the work has on local communities is very real, and rewarding.  This is a fantastic opportunity to directly contribute to MAG’s life-saving work on a day-to-day basis.

About you:

You must hold IMAS EOD 3 and IMAS IEDD 3 qualifications, with experience of working in mine clearance, EOD, and IEDD operations in developing countries that are contaminated by remnants of conflict, and of managing land release and quality management operations. You must have the ability to develop, review and comply with security and technical Standard Operating Procedures. You will be experienced in leading, motivating and managing a diverse team of people, and in mentoring and coaching others. You will also have experience of designing, developing, and delivering formal or informal training, and the transfer of appropriate skills.

You will be innovative, creative, proactive and solution oriented. You will be determined and committed to high quality standards and continually improving our effectiveness and efficiency. You will be able to establish and develop effective working relationships at all levels internally and externally, and to represent and promote MAG. In addition, you will possess excellent communication, interpersonal and organisation skills, with the ability to meet deadlines and work calmly under pressure. Experience of working independently for extended periods of time in ‘stand-alone’ environments with minimal supervision is required.

About the Iraq programme:

Following decades of conflict, Iraq is heavily contaminated with landmines and other unexploded ordnance (UXO). The recent regional crisis has added to the scale of this problem. MAG has been working in Iraq since 1992 and has expanded into new areas over the last few years. We currently have 600 national staff and 50 teams operating in 6 areas in northern Iraq. By clearing hazardous areas, MAG has enabled new schools, roads and hospitals to be built, opened up vital trade routes and allowed communities to use their farming land in safety, giving them greater food security and an escape from poverty. Our work over the last 4 years in particular has supported the surveying and clearance of contaminated land, as well as delivering life-saving risk education for those who have fled the violence and are now seeking to return. The HQ office for the programme is in Erbil, KRI, with 6 operational bases in various locations and a support office in Baghdad.
