Salary: $4,968.00 – $6,676.00 Monthly 

Positions with permanent duty stations in King County receive an additional 5% added to their monthly base salary. The salary listed in this announcement reflects the additional 5%.

The DNR’s, South Puget Sound Region is looking for a Commercial Thinning Lead Forester to join our team. As part of the state lands timber sales program, this position contributes towards the critical role of sustainable management of Trust Forestland.

Responsibilities:

• Lead the South Puget Sound Region Commercial Thinning Project under the Northern Spotted Owl (NSO) and Riparian Thinning Proviso (PI 754).
• Act as the project manager for the development and maintenance of the NSO habitat thinning forest management plan for timber harvest and silviculture activities in the South Puget Sound Region.
• Lead Variable Density Thinning (VDT) timber sale design, layout, and compliance to meet Riparian Forest Desired Future Conditions and NSO habitat enhancement objectives.
• Supervise one permanent NRS2 and one to two NRS1 non-permanent positions when funding is secured.

Required Qualifications: 

• A Bachelor’s degree in forestry or related field; and one year of professional forestry experience.
  OR A combination of equivalent education and/or experience.
• Experience in applying theory, policy, principles, and practices of the forestry profession as applied to the Northwestern States (i.e. fundamentals of silviculture of Northwest species, markets and economics, cruising methods, sales layout, logging methods, engineering, plant nutrition, propagation and weed control, reforestation and intensive forest practices, recreation, multiple use, inventory, water quality, watershed management and basic principles of fisheries management).
• Professional experience in the application of forest management objectives and timber management planning.
• Experience preparing and/or managing timber sales contracts.
• Experience with ground and cable logging systems, and forest road construction.
• Experience with, and understanding of Forest Practice rules, natural resource law, and practices.
• Experience with computer applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Demonstrated commitment to fostering and supporting an environment that honors diversity, equity, inclusion, and environmental justice practices.
