Org. Setting and Reporting
The position is located in the Social and Gender Statistics Section (SGSS), Demographic and Social Statistics Branch (DSSB), Statistics Division (SD), Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). The Statistician will report to the Chief of the Section. The Statistics Division is committed to the advancement of the global statistical system. The Division compiles and disseminates global statistical information, develop standards and norms for statistical activities and supports countries’ efforts to strengthen their national statistical systems. Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Statistician will be responsible for the following duties: – Initiates and co-ordinates the development of appropriate methods for obtaining relevant data in the areas of social and gender statistics. – Ensure the quality of collected data for accuracy, consistency and comparability. – Plans and conducts analytical programmes of work in relevant areas of statistics. This may include: identifying projects, conducting analysis and participating in technical advisory activities for national capacity building. – Supervises and contributes to the development of relevant databases, web publishing tools and other software for collection, storage and distribution of statistical data. – Undertakes methodological research with regard to standards on concepts, definitions and classifications to assist countries and other constituents in strengthening their statistical development in social and gender statistics, including on time-use statistics, gender mainstreaming in other statistical areas, care and international migration statistics. – Develops new or improved methods for statistical production and analyses. – Plans and co-ordinates seminars, workshops, expert meetings, etc. – Prepares training materials and participates as resource person in seminars, training workshops and other meetings. – Performs other duties as assigned.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in statistics, social science or related area is required. A first-level university degree in combination with additional two years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, or data science programs is an advantage.

Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience at the national and/or international level in the collection, compilation, analysis and dissemination of social statistics or related statistical area is required. Experience in social and gender statistics, in particular in the areas of gender and time-use statistics, as well as social and gender data sources including administrative registers and household sample surveys is required. Experience in the related international standards, concepts and methods is required. Experience working with National Statistical Offices is required.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

United Nations Considerations
