Position Summary 

The Stewardship and Outreach Manager is responsible for managing all aspects of New Mexico Wild’s stewardship program, including supervising our permanent and seasonal team of Wilderness Rangers, managing relationships with staff from federal agencies and nonprofit partners, managing cooperative agreements with federal agencies and other stakeholders, obtaining competitive grant funds, planning stewardship events and activities, and recruiting and managing volunteers. This position also has a primary purpose of leading outreach activities to sustain and increase organizational membership and promote volunteer involvement in and public awareness of New Mexico Wild’s work. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Manage New Mexico Wild’s Wilderness Ranger program, including hiring, training, and leading Wilderness Rangers on projects to collect data on the condition of New Mexico’s wildlands, identify stewardship needs, and plan and implement projects to address these needs with paid staff and volunteers. 
  • Supervise multiple small teams in a variety of wilderness backcountry and front-country settings, including coordination of staff schedules and tasks. 
  • Work with Conservation GIS Specialist to set up ArcGIS data collection applications and manage Wilderness Ranger data for delivery to appropriate agency staff as needed. 
  • Develop relationships and work with land management agencies to identify stewardship project needs, opportunities, and funding. 
  • Oversee reporting and project deliverables related to grants, agreements, and other funding. 
  • Recruit, train, and manage volunteers to contribute to New Mexico Wild’s stewardship and outreach programs and goals. 
  • Lead hikes and make presentations for members, prospective members, and other community groups. 
  • Arrange meetings, activities, and tabling events for membership recruitment. 
  • Represent New Mexico Wild at community events and celebrations, including participating in periodic event planning. 
  • Effectively communicate the goals and objectives of New Mexico Wild’s work to decision-makers, funders, partners, and other stakeholders. 
  • Participate in New Mexico Wild’s Advancement Team related to membership recruitment and retention, communications, marketing, design/preparation of print materials, event planning, and post-event follow-up. 
  • Participate in special assignments and projects as needed as a representative of New Mexico Wild. 
  • Ensure that New Mexico Wild’s wildlands protection goals are consistent with its diversity, equity, and inclusion objectives and emphasize equity for the communities they are most likely to affect. 

Qualifications 

The ideal candidate will have a passion for wilderness and wildlands; have professional experience with conservation and/or stewardship organizations; have excellent writing and oral communications skills, including public speaking; have a demonstrated proficiency in developing relationships around shared values and interests with diverse communities; and be adept at building a powerful movement focused on environmental protections. 

Minimum requirements include supervisory experience; public lands stewardship and monitoring experience; a passion for protecting wildlands; familiarity with the geography of New Mexico; experience in field data collection using mobile geospatial applications; ability to work for several days in the backcountry, including organizing and leading multi-day volunteer activities, trips, and camping events; an ability to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends; an understanding and commitment to abiding by “Leave No Trace” principles in the field; strong organizational and project management skills; and a high degree of self-motivation with an ability to work both independently and with groups and partners. 

Other Position Information 

  • This is a full-time, exempt position. 
  • Duty location is Albuquerque, New Mexico. 
  • Compensation is anticipated to be between $50,000 and $60,000, dependent on experience, plus health insurance (base plan is 90% employer paid) as well as dental, vision, long-term disability and life insurance policies (100% employer paid), a 403b retirement plan with an employer match of up to 5%, and competitive time off benefits.
