Based in Eugene, Oregon, the Friends of Buford Park & Mt. Pisgah (Friends) nurture and restore our connection to nature.We are a grass roots, volunteer powered non-profit organization. We collaborate with partner agencies to protect land,improve trails, restore ecosystem services, and steward rare habitats across 4700 acres. In service of this enterprise, we operate a native plant materials program. Friends is a HBRA Stakeholder, Rivers to Ridges Partnership partner, and member of the Upper Willamette Stewardship Network.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Stewardship Coordinator collaborates with Stewardship Program staff including the Floodplain Steward, Trails Steward, Upland Steward, and the Volunteer & Intern Coordinator to steward habitat and recreational resources as well as implement episodic projects defined in supporting Management Plans for Conservation and Recreation properties within the organization’s service area.

They coordinate with the Stewardship Director to refine work plans, set seasonal priorities, and expedite project schedules. They work with the Nursery Manager to orchestrate out planting of native plant materials and preparation of specified seed mixes.

The Stewardship Coordinator is a LEAD WORKER to perennial and seasonal stewards as well as volunteers. They facilitate training and train staff to operate and maintain equipment, track staff schedules, assist with performance evaluations as well as hiring processes, and enforce work rules and procedures. They assign work, track work assignments, and ensure completion of tasks assigned to stewards including the documentation of completed work. They review and approve timesheets in support of the monthly payroll process.

The Stewardship Coordinator MENTORS INTERNS and collaborates to accomplish assigned tasks.

The Stewardship Coordinator assists with recruitment, selection, and administration of CONTRACTED RESOURCES.

The Stewardship Coordinator is an ADMINISTRATOR who manages and maintains operational records and logs utilization of equipment (hours or mileage), supplies and materials, application of herbicides, as well as purchase records and receipts.

The Stewardship Coordinator is the organization’s EQUIPMENT MANAGER. They oversee the maintenance of equipment and ensure that equipment is functioning properly. They repair equipment and facilitate repair by local service providers when appropriate. They recommend new equipment and manage equipment replacement schedules. They ensure staff have the equipment they require to accomplish assigned work.

The Stewardship Coordinator is a competent EQUIPMENT OPERATOR able to operate and outfit a variety of equipment essential to stewardship operations. Equipment includes farm grade tractors, forestry machines, compact excavators and loaders, compactors, trucks & utility vehicles, attachments and implements associated with essential stewardship equipment (blowers, grading blades or boxes, masticators, mowers, pumps, rakes, shears, stump grinders) and trailers essential for equipment mobilization.

Specific duties include the following:

  • Coordinate with the Stewardship Director to review and refine project details, timelines, and priorities.
  • Coordinate with Stewardship Director to prepare bids for fee for service projects.
  • Coordinate with Stewardship Director and administrative staff to ensure ample and appropriate project activity codes.
  • Coordinate with Stewardship Director to conduct annual performance reviews and disciplinary actions for Land Stewards.
  • Collaborate with the Volunteer & Intern Coordinator to recruit and supervise interns.
  • Manage land steward time off requests and work schedules.
  • Review and approve time sheets for Land Stewards including seasonal land stewards.
  • Facilitate reporting of work-related injuries and assignment of modified duties.
  • Co-create, document, and manage a monthly work plan for Stewards. Communicate stewardship objectives and task specifications. Ensure tracking of task implementation. Document and report outcomes, issues, next steps to Stewardship Director on a weekly basis.
    • Coordinate vegetation management activities to advance stewardship objectives. Assess sites, co-develop prescriptions, and support task implementation.
    • Coordinate habitat and trail stewardship tasks including ecological burning, facilities maintenance, fire suppression, installation and maintenance of native plantings, plant material collection, tree removal, vegetation management, and woody debris management.
    • Facilitate collaboration between Land Stewards, Trails Stewards, and the Volunteer & Intern Coordinator as needed.
    • Coordinate with selected contractors and support Stewards as field contact/task coordinator where appropriate. Monitor contractor’s performance and report to Stewardship Director.
  • Maintain stewardship program records including equipment maintenance logs, equipment utilization logs, expense receipts, fuel (diesel, petrol, propane) utilization logs, steward training logs, and pesticide application licenses and records.
  • Manage inventory of fuel, pesticide, and other supplies to support stewardship program activity.
  • Manage maintenance of all equipment, gear, and tools (hardware and software) used to support stewardship program implementation.
  • Coordinate with service providers to ensure equipment is maintained or repaired in a timely and satisfactory manner.
  • Assess equipment needs, identify & select preferred equipment and present recommendations to the Stewardship Director. Facilitate acquisition of equipment.
  • Lead or facilitate training of Stewards including best management practices & safety protocols, ecological burning and fire suppression, equipment operation & maintenance, first aid, pesticide application, public engagement, software applications, and stewardship methods.
