Stewardship Coordinator

Position Summary

This position provides a unique opportunity to be part of a passionate and growing nonprofit dedicated to the long-term maintenance, protection, and enhancement of trails and public lands. The Stewardship Coordinator will be responsible for regional stewardship programming, project development, and on-the-ground management of field projects and crews. The Stewardship Coordinator will serve as the point of contact for volunteers and contractors, who are utilized to expand our capacity and engage the community. The Board President will supervise the Stewardship Coordinator.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with public lands partners, the LVT Board of Directors, and others to identify, prioritize, and execute projects and plans.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for project volunteers, sawyers, public land partners, contractors, and collaborators.
  • Recruit, manage, and recognize project volunteers, and incorporate educational and training elements within projects when appropriate.
  • Manage and lead field workdays, which may include, but are not limited to, coordinating material needs with land managers, correctly estimating volunteer and
  • staff requirements, providing project orientation to participants, completing work promptly, and ensuring safety at all times.
  • Oversee the logistical planning needed for overnight projects.
  • Communicate volunteer, contractor, and partner information for database capture.
  • Attend trainings to develop relevant knowledge and skills further.
  • Represent LVT on related regional groups.
  • Aids in the creation of safety plans and educational materials.
  • Work with the Board President, partners, and collaborators to secure grant funding.

Desired Skills

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree in natural resources, environmental science or studies, nonprofit management, or related field, plus three years of outdoor leadership experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience recruiting, coordinating, and managing volunteers, youth corps or staff positions, and working with the public in a nonprofit and government environment.
  • Has previous experience with trail work, ecological restoration, agriculture, landscaping, conservation, or other outdoor stewardship projects.
  • Experience developing and managing projects and project budgets.
  • Ability to complete first aid/CPR and sawyer certifications.
  • GIS and mapping experience.
  • Strong public speaking experience.
  • Has a track record of fostering collaborative relationships and facilitating conversations among diverse communities.
  • Proficiency with Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrates a willingness to learn and expand skills as necessary.

Required Skills

  • Possesses a strong conservation ethic and a passion for environmental stewardship.
  • Has a strong belief in LVT’s mission and preservation of public lands.
  • Able to participate in vigorous physical activity at altitudes up to 12,000 feet on uneven terrain, carrying and moving tools, materials, and supplies of 30+ pounds.
  • Effective and timely communication, both oral and written.
  • Works well with others and contributes to a positive team environment.
  • Demonstrates leadership and decision-making abilities in the organization.
  • Commitment to engaging in practices that support inclusion in the organization.
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively in Colorado and work in various outdoor environments and weather conditions.

Other Requirements

  • Must have a valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and personal vehicle.
  • A criminal background check is required for this position.

Other Details: Willingness and ability to work weekends and evenings based on project and meeting requirements. Comfort in backcountry settings, inclement weather, and high altitude. Comfort working with basic hand and power tools in support of trail or restoration work. Strong hiking ability with the capacity to travel long distances with tools and full pack at high altitudes and over uneven terrain.
