 About Western Foothills Land Trust

Western Foothills Land Trust (WFLT) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to conserving and caring for the lands and waters of western Maine. We protect forests, farms, wetlands, and scenic landscapes through conservation easements and fee-ownership. Our lands offer year-round outdoor recreation opportunities, and we operate a Nordic ski center and trails at Robert’s Farm Preserve in Norway, Maine. By connecting people with the natural world through trails, programs, and partnerships, we help strengthen the health, well-being, and vitality of our communities across western Maine.

 Position Overview

Western Foothills Land Trust is seeking a Stewardship Coordinator to join our small, collaborative team and support the long-term care of conserved lands across the western Maine region.

The Stewardship Coordinator will help monitor and steward conservation easements, maintain strong relationships with landowners, and support recreation management on Western Foothills Land Trust’s fee-owned lands. This position balances fieldwork and office work—conducting site visits, maintaining stewardship records, coordinating volunteers, and assisting with new land conservation projects.

This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career conservation professional interested in land management, recreation planning, and community-based conservation.

Key Responsibilities

Easement Monitoring and Stewardship

  • Conduct annual monitoring visits to conservation easement properties and document results.
  • Maintain positive relationships with landowners, answering questions and supporting conservation goals.
  • Maintain accurate stewardship records, maps, and reports.
  • Assist in recruiting, training and managing volunteers for land care and stewardship activities.

Fee-owned Land: Stewardship and Recreation Management

  • Support management of public access and recreation on WFLT’s preserves, ensuring safe and sustainable use.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining public use guidelines that balance recreation with healthy ecosystems.
  • Conduct site visits to assess trail conditions, signage, parking, and other infrastructure needs.
  • Coordinate trail maintenance projects with volunteers and contractors.
  • Partner with local recreation groups and community organizations to promote responsible trail use and expand access.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in natural resources, environmental science, planning, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • A valid vehicle driver’s license and occasional use of a personal vehicle.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft suite, Google Drive, and Gmail.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Strong organizational and project management abilities.
  • Experience and comfort working outdoors in varied terrain and weather conditions.
  • Proficiency with GIS (ArcGIS or QGIS), Microsoft Office, and GPS tools preferred.
  • Familiarity with conservation easements, land management, or land trust operations a plus.

Compensation and Benefits

Western Foothills Land Trust offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience, generous paid time off, tools and equipment needed to perform roles and responsibilities, and a flexible, supportive work environment. Benefits include a healthcare stipend, matching retirement savings contribution, professional development opportunities, and abundant time outdoors.
