Stewardship Manager

Greater Hells Canyon Council (GHCC) is looking for an experienced stewardship and restoration professional to join our team!

GHCC is the only grassroots nonprofit focused exclusively on one of the last great wild places in the lower 48 states—the Greater Hells Canyon Region. Positioned at a critical intersection of large eco-regions, the lands and waters we protect connect the northern Rockies, Oregon’s high desert, the Columbia River Basin, and the Cascade Mountains to one another. Our region encompasses Northeast Oregon and extends into Southeast Washington and North Central Idaho.

GHCC is looking to add a new role to lead our stewardship projects with a focus on beaver co-existence and riparian restoration efforts. Competitive applications will demonstrate skills in some type of fieldwork (e.g., stream/fish surveys, building BDAs, monitoring water quality), relationship building, and project management.

Core Responsibilities:

Beaver Coexistence

• Coordinate the NE Oregon Working Group: host regular meetings, set priorities and agendas, work to keep current members engaged and recruit new members.
• Lead the Working Group to create a beaver action plan that aligns priorities between all stakeholders for the steps needed to increase beavers on the landscape in NE Oregon over next 3-5 years.
• Organize outings: plan and host knowledge and resource sharing gatherings with practitioners and/or the public, coordinate field trips for curious landowners with beaver conflicts, and attend public events as a beaver ambassador.
• Attend BeaverCorps program at the Beaver Institute to become a coexistence practitioner.
• Work with partners to build positive relationships with landowners struggling with beaver conflicts and provide resources and implementation support on coexistence projects.
• Host and support beaver dam analog workshops and restoration projects.

Additional Restoration & Stewardship Projects:

• Collect data and engage volunteers through citizen science projects.
• With partners and other GHCC staff, advocate for native species and their habitats in state and federal policies and land management projects.
• Assist with identifying habitat suitable for future restoration efforts and finding funding for those potential projects.
• Assist with outreach and communication efforts like webinars, workshops, conferences, website development, social media, and print communications about regional conservation and restoration efforts.

• Adept and willing to speak with community members from all walks of life.
• Work well in partnership with other organizations.
• Experience with managing coalitions.
• Background in a related hard science and some experience with fieldwork (e.g. stream monitoring, building BDAs, fish surveys, etc.)
• Weave Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity into the fabric of your work for GHCC, including modeling cultural sensitivity and competency.
• Independent starter and self-sufficient.
• Excited to help build out a program – not looking for a job that is 100% set in stone.
• Be an active part of a small, collaborative, and fun team.

Bonus Skills: Public speaking, event/field trip planning, knowledge of riparian systems, and familiarity with process-based restoration techniques.

Supervisor: Stewardship Manager reports directly to the Executive Director. We are a very collaborative team and work together closely.

Compensation and Benefits: Salary range: $50K to $60K, based on experience. GHCC offers a generous vacation policy (starting at 4 weeks), 10 paid holidays, 80 hrs of family/personal sick days, paid health and vision insurance, some flexible hours, and opportunities for recreation time in the field to explore our incredible mission area.

Office Location: GHCC employees currently work remotely, though nearly all of us live in Wallowa or Union Counties and we make an effort to see each other regularly. Employee location for this role is flexible within our mission area/Blue Mountains Ecoregion which encompasses NE Oregon and SE Washington.

Travel Requirements: Valid license and reliable vehicle capable of going on backcountry roads. Some weekend and evening hours are required.
