Stewardship Specialist I, II, or III

Description: The Stewardship Specialist is responsible for implementing stewardship projects in the Walker Basin and beyond. Responsibilities include leading and/or conducting stewardship activities including, but not limited to, fuels management and conifer removal, wildlife friendling fence construction, mechanical and chemical weed control, irrigation installation and operation, native plant revegetation, trail building, process-based stream restoration and other stream and wetland improvements. Strong experience in forestry, fuels management, and/or fence construction is preferred for the current opening.

Open position may be filled at a Stewardship Specialist I, II, or III level, determined based on qualifications. Each successive level has increasing technical expertise and management responsibilities.

The ideal candidate will

• Enjoy working outside, often on four to eight day hitches, in sometimes challenging conditions.
• Be organized and efficient in the field and work well in a team both leading and taking direction.
• Have a desire to develop skills and qualifications across a range of restoration techniques, with current chainsaw, forestry, and fencing skills and certifications preferred.
• Have demonstrated supervisory (levels II & III) and project management (level III) experience.

Expectations and Core Accountabilities

• Delivers high quality results that meet project timelines and deliverables.
• Leads field operations related to area of expertise, giving direction to other staff specialists and seasonal technicians.
• Work in the field up to 80% (level III) to 95% (level I) of the time during the field season.
• Supervises up to 4 (level II) or 7 (level III) seasonal technicians.
• Follows safety protocols and adheres to ethical standards.
• Communicates effectively with team members, leadership, and project partners.

Requirements

• Experience with herbicide application, fuels management, heavy equipment operation, irrigation operation, native plant revegetation, fence building, trail building and/or process-based stream restoration. Strong experience in forestry, fuels management, and/or fence construction is preferred for the current opening. Pesticide applicators license or sawyer certification a plus. Greater breadth and depth of experience is required for placement in higher level Specialist positions.
• Commitment to meeting objectives of diverse projects. Ability to solve problems in the field and pivot based on shifting priorities.
• Ability/desire to work long hours in the field, often on 4-8 day hitches in remote settings.
• Actively contribute to an inclusive, collaborative environment.
• Demonstrated leadership skills and desire to develop personal skillset and train others. Supervisory experience required for levels II and III and project management experience required for level III.
