The Falkland Islands Fishery is recognised globally for its management of sustainable
fish stocks. As the single largest contributor to the Falkland Islands’ GDP, the continued
success of the Fishery is vital to the future economic development of the country.
The Role
The Fisheries Department of the Falkland Islands Government is looking to recruit a Stock
Assessment Scientist to undertake stock assessments of commercially important fishery species
and provide timely scientific advice to the Government for long-term sustainable management of
the fisheries.
The Person
The successful candidate must have a PhD in an appropriate biological, fisheries or
mathematical discipline, or significant relevant work experience in a stock assessment role.
The successful candidate must have adequate training in fisheries stock assessment or another
relevant discipline, such as population dynamics, and be able to apply standard fish stock
assessment techniques, develop new modelling approaches, and have a high level of competence
with modern statistical methods.
Candidates should have a good understanding of commercial fisheries issues with at
least two years of post-graduate experience in fisheries data management and analysis.
Candidates should have a good publication record and be able to report findings in both
scientific papers and at conferences, but also through reports and presentations to clients and
stakeholders.
The Package
- Fixed Term Contract, up to 4 years.
- Starting Salary, basic starting salary £39,944 – £46,057 per annum (depending on
qualifications and experience) rising to £49,341. - Eligibility for a 25% gratuity, payable on successful completion of the contract
- 30 days Annual Leave, plus government and public holidays (totalling 41 days leave).
- Relocation Allowance, to help with moving costs.
- Flights Package for you and recognised dependents at the beginning and end of contract, and
additional annual return flights contingent on the duration of the contract. - Government Housing for rent and a starter pack to help you settle in.
