Introduction
The world’s largest fossil fuel producers are already on track to produce more than twice the amount of coal, oil and gas than can ever be burned if we are to hit our climate targets. The Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative champions a new international mechanism to complement the Paris Agreement, one that would hold governments accountable for their fossil fuel production plans in an effort to advance a just transition.
The Position
The Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative is hiring a skilled and dedicated Strategic Communications Specialist who can help us scale a public communications and engagement campaign for a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty around the world. The Strategic Communications Specialist will join the fast-growing International Support Team for the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative. They will work closely with the Communications, Campaigns and Political teams to scale the traditional media, digital engagement, social media and strategic communications required to support hundreds of thousands of people on every continent to advocate for their governments to support the negotiation of a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty.
This position is full-time, permanent, exempt, and salaried. Salary is calculated based on location and experience of the successful candidate in the range of 50,000 – 65,000 USD.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the scope, design, and implementation of impactful regional and national campaign strategies and storytelling projects
- Support the communications team collective monitoring tools, documents and processes, and contribute to tracking and reporting of performance for the Treaty Initiative
- Create and distribute a variety of communications assets directed to different audiences: press releases, comms packs, newsletters, blogs, fact sheets, talking points, quote sheets and other campaign and organizational materials
- Build and maintain regional and country specific press lists, building, deepening and maintaining relationships with media in priority countries; support the appropriate regional coordinators with media pitching and communications coordination in the region
- Pitch stories and materials to key journalists around identified moments
- Support the Digital team with social media content production according to the content calendar as needed, with a particular focus on copywriting
- Manage and review communications materials, including monitoring and updating evergreen content in briefings, presentations and website, to ensure they are current and present in a way that is consistent with Treaty’s voice and standards
Experience and attributes:
Required:
- A deep passion for climate justice and supporting an equitable transition to a world without coal, oil or gas.
- At least 3-5 years of experience in communications campaigning and/or media and journalism
- Experience in communications campaign including content production, copywriting, media relations, strategic communications, social media management and engagement
- Commitment to contributing to an anti-racist, decolonial, inclusive organisational culture.
- Ability to work irregular hours with a remote and virtual global team
- Excellent interpersonal skills, strong initiative, and motivation
- Fluency in English is required.
Desired:
- Fluency in Spanish, French, Portuguese, Arabic and other languages is highly desired.
- Experience with Slack, Trello, Squarespace, Canva, Adobe, and other content creation tools
- Experience with Meltwater, Cision and other media tracking tools
- Experience with X, Instagram, Facebook, Linkedin, Tik Tok and other social media
