The group of bioinspired autonomous miniature robots at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Stuttgart is developing an active stiffness control strategy for soft robots.  By integrating materials with tunable stiffness properties and AI algorithms, this project aims to revolutionize the stiffness control capabilities of soft robots. This adaptability empowers the robots to autonomously respond to various environmental conditions and tasks, thereby expanding their functionality and effectiveness. Now we have several student assistant positions open for this project.

Your area of responsibility

The assistant will be involved in the following tasks:

  • designing and optimizing the robot’s mechanical structure
  • robot fabrication and assembly
  • designing the robot’s control and power supply systems
  • fabrication and evaluation of artificial muscles’ performance
  • building the test platform;
  • Data collection and postprocessing

Your profile

  • Interest in applied research
  • Background knowledge in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or chemical engineering is preferred.
  • Experienced user of CAD software, e.g., Solidworks, etc.
  • Experience in 3D printing and laser cutting
  • Experience in teamwork
  • Basic knowledge for machine learning is desirable
  • Confident handling of the English language
  • Currently enrolled at a german university

Our offer

We offer you thorough training in a varied job in an interdisciplinary team with excellent working conditions. Master students holding a Bachelor’s degree will be paid €13,03 per hour. Contracts are given per semester. A modernly equipped workplace, a strongly international working environment, as well as the affiliation to a daycare center for young children.

Volume of employment: Max. 83 hours per month
