Student Board Member

In order to encourage more involvement by college students and younger members, the Rock River Coalition (RRC) has a student-specific position on its board of directors. The student board member is selected through an open application process, commits to a one-year term, and has voting rights (as any other board member). The student board member will gain valuable experience in non-profit organization operations and in providing leadership for her/his peers.

Goals

  • Increase involvement of regional students in RRC activities and efforts
  • Bring new ideas and perspectives to the organization and its efforts
  • Improve communication and involvement of younger generations
  • Provide learning opportunity for students to learn about NGO governance

Process

  • Student applications are accepted when the position is open. Application materials include a cover letter, at least one reference (two preferred), and an unofficial transcript.
  • Requirements
    • Student’s academic home must be within the watershed
    • Be currently enrolled as full-time student (a 2- or 4-year institution)
    • Be able to make a firm commitment for at least 9 months of a 12 month term.
  • The current board reviews and selects an applicant based on these selection criteria:
    • Evidence of commitment and follow-through
    • Evidence of leadership in other endeavors
    • Ability to communicate effectively
    • Ideas for carrying out organization’s mission

Expectations

  • Must be active members (Student Membership $15)
  • Must attend all board meetings (Once a month, 4th Wednesday at 5:15)
  • Provide ideas for the organization to consider
  • Act as guest editor of newsletter for one issue per year
  • Volunteer for committee(s) as appropriate
  • Contribute to RRC projects and efforts
  • Help seek grant and/or other funding for the organization

Rules

  • Not act or speak on behalf of the organization; must have any public statement about the organization approved beforehand
  • Comply with 501(c)(3) rules regarding political activities
  • Comply with RRC Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Justice Policy
