Job Description

 

New Sooner Orientation (NSO) is a key part of every new student’s successful transition to OU. Incoming freshman and transfer students will attend NSO days on campus with their parents/guardians/supporters for a full day program where they will be advised, enroll in courses, and hear from various offices on campus to learn about resources students will need throughout their time at OU.

Orientation Interns will serve in multiple capacities throughout the Orientation Days. Orientation Interns will assist new students in navigating through their Orientation Day by introducing them to campus, resources, activities, and opportunities available to students at OU. Interns will also assist with NSO set up, check-in, program facilitation, and ensuring the program runs smoothly.

Work Schedule:

2-3 days a week, starting May 13 – July 31, 2024 between 7 AM- 5 PM. Workdays change weekly. There are 29 New Sooner Orientation Days throughout the summer, with five training days beforehand.

Responsibilities:

Orientation Interns are responsible for a variety of roles during New Sooner Orientation Days. Roles will rotate on a weekly schedule. Orientation Interns roles will include the following:

  • Serve and support students and families throughout their New Sooner Orientation Day
  • Lead a daily small group with 2 additional Orientation Interns
  • Help guide and answer questions
  • Assist with ensuring students attend trainings, advising, class enrollment, and any activities throughout the day
  • Lead conversations to develop community amongst new students
  • Serve as a resource to new students and their families by creating an inclusive environment and assisting with any questions they may have about the OU experience
  • Assist with execution and logistics of the day-to-day operations of NSO which includes set-up, check-in, giving presentations, serving on panels, and tear down
  • Attend and participate in staff training and meetings
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Each Orientation Intern will be subject to background checks and Student Misconduct check per the Minors on Campus Policy. Interns will not be hired until complete.

  • Employment is for Summer only (May 13 – July 31, 2024)
  • Orientation Interns may take online summer courses; Orientation Programs Professional staff will work with Orientation Interns regarding in-person summer courses.
  • Applicants can be Camp Crimson Small Group Leaders.
  • Accepted Orientation Interns will receive a certificate of completion as well.

Job Requirements

 

Required Education: Must be currently enrolled in the Spring term as a full-time student at the University of Oklahoma.

  • Must attach Spring 2024 class schedule
  • Applicants should be in good academic standing with the University of Oklahoma.

Skills:

  • Applicants should be comfortable speaking in front of groups of various sizes (large and small) and be able to engage in conversations with people of various backgrounds. 
  • Applicants should have a desire to work with a diverse group of fellow students in a team environment.
  • Applicants should be flexible to adapt in various situations and be able to quickly think on their feet. 
  • Applicants need to be highly motivated, organized, timely, welcoming, and familiar with the OU campus and resources.
  • Applicants should be in good academic standing with the University of Oklahoma. 
  • Each applicant will be subject to background checks and Student Misconduct check per the Minors on Campus Policy. Guides will not be hired until completed.

  • Must be able to crouch, pull, push, reach, stand, engage in repetitive motions, grasp, walk, feel, touch, speak, hear, and see. 
  • Must be able to lift/carry a minimum of 30 lbs.
  • Must be able to spend extended hours indoors and outdoors for work.
