Position Summary

Supports, plans, and manages cases of students who are of concern. Provides guidance to other university officials and to students in order to promote health, safety, and well-being of the university community. Responsible for intervention with those community members who may pose a threat to themselves and/or others. Primary function is to manage a case from intake to closure, and to support the work of the Care and Intervention Team.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES – RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develops, promotes, implements, and evaluates programs and workshops for graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Interviews and facilitates meetings in order to inform, solve problems, and carry out functional tasks.
  • Provide outreach to graduate and undergraduate students referred to the Care and Intervention Team.
  • Provide intake appointments to conduct a holistic assessment of needs.
  • Provide follow-up appointments as appropriate to coordinate an action plan, referrals, and support.
  • Connect graduate and undergraduate students with the appropriate resources on and off-campus.
  • Communicate and collaborate with appropriate staff, resources, and the Care and Intervention Team.
  • Document case notes in electronic record-keeping system (Advocate).
  • Track cases and informs supervisor of current cases.

Care and Intervention Team Responsibilities

  • Attends and participates in Care and Intervention Team meetings by having case notes prepared on current students, reviewing new referrals, and contributing to the discussion.
  • Makes referrals to the Care and Intervention Team as appropriate for graduate and undergraduate students working directly with case management.
  • Supports the Care and Intervention Team by providing interventions to graduate and undergraduate students.

Outreach and Awareness Responsibilities

  • Creates marketing, awareness, and education campaigns.
  • Develops and delivers educational presentations tailored to meet the needs of the audience.
  • Coordinate with various campus offices to ensure coherent integration of messaging.

Departmental Responsibilities

  • Complete special projects or other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Assist in developing and implementing strategic plan(s).
  • Participates in other committees as assigned.

Interacts with:

  • Supervisor/Director – in order to exchange information, seek alternatives, and provide requested work.
  • Students/Student Organizations – in order to advise, train, intervene, consult, and supervise.
  • Co-workers/Staff – in order to exchange information and coordinate activities.
  • University Departments – in order to coordinate programs and services and interpret policies and procedures.
  • Colleges/Universities/Local and National Agencies/Professionals – in order to provide resources, consultation, and referral.
  • Committee/Board Members – in order to exchange information and conduct proceedings.
  • Faculty/Administrators/Health and Law Professionals – in order to provide information and consultation.
  • Students/Parents/Public – in order to provide information and consultation.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE HEALTH-SAFETY OF OTHERS

This position has significant responsibility for the health and safety of others. Responsibilities include ensuring that proper policies and procedures are developed and maintained for student health and safety.

IMPACT ON PROGRAMS – SERVICES – OPERATIONS

Improper handling of responsibilities may result in substantial health and financial liability as well as negative impact on programs, services, and image of the University. Well-developed strategies and programs will affect academic achievement of students and retention.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Standard office environment. The job requires very little physical effort.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • May require valid vehicle operator’s license where needed to perform duties of the position.
  • This position requires or will require prior to the completion of the probationary period: knowledge of basic personal computer terminology and operations, and the ability to use e-mail and the Internet.
  • All positions in SLE are designated as critical status. In the event of a university closure, modification, or suspension of operations due to snow or other emergency condition, persons in this position are expected to make all reasonable attempts to report to work as scheduled for the duration of the closure/suspension. If a person has an approved remote work agreement to work a portion of their normally scheduled work hours remotely, they may be called upon to work on-site to serve the MSU community.  

    Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

    Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of post-bachelor degree work, such as a Masters in Administration or a Behavioral Science field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in administration, program development and personnel development and training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

    Desired Qualifications

    • Post-bachelor degree work such as a Master’s in Student Affairs Administration, Developmental Psychology, Educational Psychology, Social Work, or Counselor Education.
    • Previous case management and student conduct experience.
    • Working knowledge of electronic record-keeping systems (Advocate or other case management software).
    • Experience navigating a complex system of multiple offices/partners.
    • Experience supporting students and families in crisis.
    • Experience utilizing trauma-informed models of care.
    • Experience working with graduate students.
    • Strong administrative skills.
    • Strong oral and written communication skills.
    • Training in mental health first aid, continuation of care, suicide prevention, substance abuse, behavior threat analysis, de-escalation, restorative justice, and/or active listening.
    • Ability to work with diverse individuals.
    • Able to listen to and process different perspectives from one’s own.
    • Ability to collaborate and build relationships with diverse individuals and populations.
    • Ability to manage and de-escalate crisis situations.
    • Commitment to student support, threat management, and early intervention efforts.
    • Ability to solve problems effectively and creatively.
