About the Veterans Resource Center 
The Veterans Resource Center (VRC) at Golden West College is dedicated to supporting veterans and their dependents in their academic journey. We offer a variety of resources and services, including guidance on navigating the admissions and financial aid processes, connecting with academic support, and fostering a sense of community. Through individual advising, workshops, and events, the VRC empowers veterans to thrive at GWC and achieve their educational goals. The Student Equity Specialist will coordinate events for veterans and oversee daily operations and activities n the VRC. 
Summary
Performs a variety of student-centered services supporting acclamation to college life, retention, and success. Assists in coordinating and carrying out various student-centered events and activities contributing to student success and retention. Monitors students’ acceptable academic progress and other indicators to offer positive interventions and prepare reports for student success program compliance.
 
Distinguishing Career Features
The Student Success & Equity Specialist works collaboratively within Student Services providing support to new and at-risk student populations and to facilitate the delivery of student success and support services such as assessment, orientation, educational planning, and connections to activities contributing to retention. The Student Success & Equity Specialist also gathers data for use in writing reports to higher education oversight agencies and assists with outreach and collaborative efforts to secondary education for promoting pathways to college and careers.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Specific duties may vary among departments, divisions and jobs. Incumbents typically perform a substantial portion or all of the following types of duties, as assigned:

  • Participates in the day-to-day activities and operations of the Student Success, Assessment, and other offices that collaborate to provide targeted services for students.
  • Assists with developing and implementing program objectives, student service outcomes, assessment measures, policies, and procedures.
  • Provides information and assistance to students, staff, faculty, administrators, and others concerning matriculation, registration, and retention services. Participates in advocating and resolving student issues relating to matriculation and registration.
  • Assists in coordinating services and events related to the matriculation process such as Priority Registration events, educational planning workshops, Navigate OCC, and Open Registration.
  • Maintains and monitors the implementation of strategic communication plans to incoming and continuing students, including referring students to campus resources and programs.
  • Assists in the planning and development of schedules for matriculation events, recruitment fairs, high school visits, and the day-to-day operations of the office.
  • Assists in coordinating and implementing programs designed to support the recruitment efforts of the college. Major projects include Senior Day, Welcome Days, College Nights, and Educational Partnership Breakfast.
  • Assists with implementation of student services and support initiatives and tools such online forms, early alert, intervention, online orientation, and other decision support resources.
  • Assists in maintaining office and student records, including collecting and entering data, preparing monthly reports containing relevant student information, and working with technology and institutional research services to access, store, and retrieve data.
  • May assist with retention and completion efforts of the college, including coordinating events, scheduling workshops, and presentations.
  • Assists in updating related webpages to keep students and staff informed about activities.
  • Assists with research of successful college/university student support programs to identify and apply best-practices and events used to support student onboarding.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position.

  • Qualifications and Physical Demands

    Knowledge and Skills

  • Requires working knowledge of the concepts and legislation applying to student success programs including orientation, assessment, enrollment, advising, and retention strategies.
  • Requires basic knowledge of data-driven methods to identify students who may be at risk of not continuing.
  • Requires working knowledge of the transfer and occupational programs offered through higher education.
  • Requires working knowledge of enrollment policies and procedures, graduation, and certificate requirements.
  • Requires knowledge of and skill at using personal computer-aided applications for office productivity, data management, and preparation of communications materials.
  • Requires sufficient math skills to read and understand basic statistical concepts and data relationships.
  • Requires sufficient knowledge of and skill at using English grammar for written communications.
  • Requires well-developed human relations skills to make presentations to student audiences, convey college life advantages, exercise patience, and facilitate discussions with students and faculty.

  • Requires the ability to learn and apply special computer applications used with student services, policies and procedures of the college, and goals set for student success and support programs.

  • Requires the ability to interview and develop working relationships with students.
  • Requires the ability to apply motivational interviewing techniques with students to encourage their engagement with higher education.
  • Requires the ability to set goals and meet them in a timely manner.
  • Requires the ability to access and document student files and ensure privacy of information.
  • Requires the ability to communicate in a professional manner, in both formal and informal settings with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Requires the ability to respond to a diverse set of cultures, ethnicities, socio-economic groups, and their interests.
  • Physical Abilities 

  • The general physical demands, working conditions, and essential job functions associated with this classification will be kept on file with the Office of Human Resources.

  • Minimum Qualifications: Education, Experience, D.E.I.A 
    The position typically requires an Associate’s degree in a social or human services field or education and three years of experience working with student populations. A Bachelor’s degree may substitute for some experience. Or, any combination of education and experience which would meet the required equivalent qualifications for the position.

    Demonstrated evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the racial, ethnic, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic, academic, and cultural diversity within the community college student population, including students with different ability statuses (e.g., physical and/or learning) as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom and campus.

    Licenses and Certificates
    Requires a valid driver license.
     
    Working Conditions 
    Work is performed indoors where minimal safety considerations exist.

    Conditions of Employment

    This recruitment is for one permanent full-time classified, 40 hour per week, 12-month per year position. The normal hours of work are Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm. This position does not have a remote work option and is expected to be on campus Monday through Friday. The effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor.

    Pay Philosophy
