Job Description

Job Overview: The Student Support Specialist, Youth Futures oversees the International Rescue Committees Youth Futures program, which prepares refugee youth for success in high school and beyond. Youth Futures includes an after-school program at Clarkston High School and a college readiness summer camp for high school students. The Student Support Specialist is responsible for leading program planning, implementation, and reporting. This position supervises an AmeriCorps member.

Major Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead the planning and implementation of the International Rescue Committees afterschool and summer program for English Language Learners at Clarkston High School and other DeKalb County schools.
  • Build and maintain good relationships with school personnel and work with school staff to conduct targeted student recruitment.
  • Oversee daily afterschool program activities; Maintain a positive and safe environment and ensure program compliance.
  • Lead enrichment opportunities for students including after-school workshops and weekend field trips.
  • Coordinate academic support for refugee and immigrant students based on need.
  • Conduct accurate program tracking and reporting to ensure program compliance with its goals through required reporting to funders and internal stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with Youth Program team members to support students in planning for post-secondary education.
  • Provide supervision and technical assistance to Youth Futures AmeriCorps Service members, interns, and volunteers in accordance with IRCs People Manager Standards.
  • Attend Youth Education Team meetings and complete administrative duties, including but not limited to reporting, timesheets, and expense reports.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

Education: Bachelors degree in social work or related field of study preferred.

Work Experience:

Relevant professional experience in positive youth development, youth social emotional development, youth academic support, and ensuring participant safety in a school-based setting preferred; minimum of 1 year experience strongly preferred.

Demonstrated Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong relationship building, diplomacy, and networking skills; ability to effectively build internal and external relationships.
  • A belief in the ability of all youth to reach their education, career, and personal goals.
  • Demonstrated experience engaging youth in online environments including through Zoom, Facebook, or other social media.
  • Demonstrated success working and communicating effectively in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Self-starter with excellent problem-solving skills combined with the proven ability to prioritize and manage time effectively.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in work product.
  • Fluent in English, both spoken and written; proficiency in language(s) spoken by client group is desired (such as: Spanish, Dari, Pashto, Arabic, French, Haitian-Creole).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook); ability to use the internet and other digital tools for data entry, research, and problem-solving purposes.
  • Valid drivers license and access to a personal, insured vehicle.

Working Environment:

  • A combination of standard office environment, remote work, and field time within the service delivery area to perform the above outlined responsibilities.
  • Occasional domestic (non-local) travel required; up to 10%.
  • May require occasional weekend and/or evening work.
