Overview

Jhpiego seeks a Study Coordinator to provide technical support, oversight and strategic direction for the Unitaid funded project that aims at the supporting interventions to mitigate antimalarial drug resistance in Uganda. The project will implement interventions that rapidly diversify artemisinin -based combination therapy (ACT) use. The project goal is to enable widespread access to affordable health products through scale-up by government and partners, to contribute to the global health response to diseases that predominantly affect people in LMICs.

Reporting to the Malaria Technical Advisor, the study coordinator will be responsible for providing technical and implementation support to the Ministry of Health-National Malaria Control Division (NMCD), the research organization and the districts implementing the project activities. He/she will ensure the technical quality of all activities in support of the project’s overall goal. He/she will also provide ongoing technical support to the district health teams and other partners and stakeholders as relevant to the project scope and in accordance with its approach to understanding and influencing positive change in health. He/she will also be responsible for capacity building function, which involves working closely with the project’s partners, including the district health teams, health workers and the community structures.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and coordinate advocacy engagements with the Ministry of Health and stakeholders on development and implementation of strategies to mitigate antimalarial drug resistance in Uganda.
  • Support DHTs and frontline health workers to implement strategies to mitigate antimalarial drug resistance in their respective districts and health facilities.
  • Support the partner CBO to develop and disseminate information on mitigation of antimalarial drug resistance.
  • Support the Ministry of Health supply chain in developing national representative quantifications for the medicines and supplies required for mitigation of antimalarial drug resistance.
  • Support the NMCD to plan for and conduct ACTs efficacy studies in the country.
  • Develop program workplans and oversee their implementation as per project timelines.
  • Conduct routine assessments and supervision visits to programme related sites and activities.
  • Work closely with the M&E to collect and analyse complete programmatic data in a timely fashion.
  • Provide regular progress, trip and monthly reports to the line manager in a timely manner and ensure that all the reports are filed.
  • Support the M&E officer to ensure that all relevant project documentation is disseminated to the district health teams.
  • Participate in relevant meetings, presenting project results and experiences as required.
  • Develop effective and collaborative relationships with all project partners, including the district health teams, implementing partners and network of CSOs.
  • Ensure that complementary technical approaches are established with other stakeholders in similar geographical locations.
  • Ensure effective coordination with and capacity building support to the district and community levels.
  • Capture and document field activities, case studies and experience from the field during the course of routine work

Required Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in a Health-related field including Public Health, Community Health or equivalent. A strong background in research in medicine and nursing is strongly recommended.
  • At least 6 years work experience in the malaria field /or experience working on a donor funded project.
  • Strong health programming and advocacy background
  • Experience in community-based health care delivery.
  • Experience in capacity building/ transferring of skills.
  • Experience in working with the central and local government structures.
  • Experience in developing work plans and activity budgets.
  • Thorough understanding of both preventive and curative aspects of malaria control
  • Familiarity with the strategies and guidelines of the Uganda National Malaria Control Division
  • Competency in computer applications (word, excel, power point)
  • Excellent communication skills, with strong leadership skills and a supportive management style
  • Excellent diplomacy and stakeholder liaison skills, and experience in working in partnerships to deliver programmes
