Organization Overview Together with its members, ACRES Land Trust protects over 7,800 acres of natural area and working land in northeast Indiana, northwest Ohio and southern Michigan – forever. ACRES, Indiana’s oldest and largest local nonprofit land trust, was founded in 1960, and today offers more than 30 miles of trails open dawn to dusk at no charge for hiking, photography, birding, wellness, family and school visits and adventure.  

Position Summary ACRES has three, full-time, summer intern positions available for the 2024 summer season. Primary functions are land stewardship and protection tasks such as trail maintenance, construction and installation of visitor amenities such as benches, boardwalks, and small bridges, assisting with restoration activities, performing invasive species management, marking boundaries and various other tasks related to natural resource management.  

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to perform light construction; work with hand tools and equipment, and basic computer skills. 
  • Other required qualifications include: a valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation, ability to maintain confidentiality and use appropriate judgment in handling information and records, ability to work accurately with attention to detail, ability to work in a team environment as well as independently.
  • Applicants pursuing a degree related to natural resources are preferred.
  • Applicants are REQUIRED to have a home residence in Steuben, Noble, LaGrange, or DeKalb county in Indiana. One or two  positions may be available for applicants outside of these counties.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions Ability to lift and move 50 lbs. on an occasional basis. Ability to stand for extended periods. Ability to transport self across uneven, outdoor terrain. Ability to travel by automobile. Working outdoors in all weather conditions (except life-threatening weather occurrences) is required. May require occasional weekend work. Position is budgeted for 40 hours per week. Hours are flexible based upon workload and organizational needs.   Compensation Interns will be paid $13.00/hr. No other compensation or benefits will be offered.
