Job Title: Habitat Restoration Summer Intern

Dates and Hours: Start date is June 1st and end date is August 14th,  40 hours per week, primarily Monday – Friday 8AM – 4PM

Pay: $15.00/hr, some unpaid time off is allowed during the internship period.  

Housing: Free, shared housing available 4 miles from the Nature Center.

Job Requirements: Candidates must be at least 18 years old. Ideal candidates are pursuing a career in natural resources, possess a love of nature, willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions and on uneven, muddy terrain, and can carry field equipment (10-30lbs). Knowledge of native and invasive plant species is highly valuable. In addition, teamwork, problem-solving and eagerness to learn are must-have qualities. 

Job Description: Woodland Dunes Nature Center is seeking THREE motivated interns for our summer fieldwork.  Note that 95% of this work is outdoors, weather permitting.

  • 70% Removing invasive plants (such as Japanese Barberry, Honeysuckle sp., and Buckthorn) through our US Forest Service (USFS) grant projects. This is physically demanding, outdoor work.  It involves using heavy tools in the field as well as mixing and applying herbicide. Training will be provided.
  • 10% Watering, caring for and planting native shrubs and forbs in our 9-acre deer exclosure for federally endangered Rusty-patched Bumble Bee habitat enhancement. Interns will also help plant bareroot trees.
  • 10% Adding additional posts to our 9-acre deer exclosure and removing old caging materials from previous planting projects.
  • 5% Helping to write nature-themed articles for our “Ripples” series for the local newspaper and website
  • 5% Helping with various citizen science projects and hands-on experiences like bee surveys for the federally endangered Rusty-patched Bumble Bee
