About TRIO Upward Bound
Upward Bound is one of the Federal TRIO educational opportunity outreach programs , which support and motivate low-income, first-generation potential college students as well as students with disabilities to navigate academic environments from middle school to postgraduate programs. The goal of Federal TRIO programs is to increase the percentage of low-income and first-generation college students who successfully pursue postsecondary education opportunities. Upward Bound provides academic and personal support and guidance to help qualifying high school students get to college. DCTC Upward Bound serves 123 students from three high schools in Dakota County: Burnsville, South St. Paul, and Two Rivers.
About UB Summer
The Upward Bound summer program is a 6-week academic program that offers participants unique hands-on learning experiences that help bridge the gap from one school year to the next and prevents summer learning melt. Students receive instruction in English, math, science, and foreign language, research postsecondary options, visit college campuses, and develop their leadership skills. The summer program takes place at Dakota County Technical College and serves around 40 students.
Responsibilities

  • Plan, implement, and lead all aspects of the Upward Bound summer science courses
    • Teach three 50-minute sections Tuesdays-Fridays for 5 weeks
    • You can choose course content, but it must include hands-on labs
      • STEAM curriculum is available for the following topics:
        • Genetics and DNA
        • Paleontology
        • Robotics and Animatronics
  • Attend UB Summer Orientation and all mandatory staff trainings as directed by Project Director
  • Regularly communicate and meet with UB advisor(s) about student progress and concerns
  • Attend weekly check-in meetings
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Qualified to teach science at a high school or college level
  • At least 1 year teaching science, preferably at a high school level
  • Knowledge of expectations for high school- and college-level science standards
  • Experience working with high school students, specifically low-income and/or potential first-generation college students
  • Knowledge of common barriers low-income/first-generation college students face while in college
  • Ability to connect with and motivate high school students
  • Ability to work independently without supervision
