As the Supervising Fish and Wildlife Biologist based in Charleston, Oregon, you’ll play a key role in conserving the fish populations and habitats in the Coos, Coquille, and Tenmile basins. As a supervisor and team leader, you’ll help shape fisheries management activities throughout the region. Your work will include:

• Supporting and leading a talented team of fisheries professionals
• Building strong relationships with local Tribes, community groups, and government partners
• Overseeing fish habitat restoration, hatchery and volunteer activities, inventory of habitat and fisheries resources
• Helping protect, manage, and enhance native fish populations and their environments
• Engaging with the public, sharing the story of our work, and promoting stewardship

This position requires a Hazardous Waste Operations Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training certification and All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Safety Education Card be obtained within six months of hire.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Minimum Qualifications

Option 1: Three years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program. At least one year of the experience must be at a technical or professional level performing activities in a fish or wildlife program such as researching and analyzing data, conducting investigations, applying pertinent laws and regulations, or coordinating and monitoring project activities; AND a Bachelor’s degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science or a closely-related Bachelor’s degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework,

-OR–

Option 2: Three additional years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fisheries or wildlife program. 

Note: In addition to each option above, one year of experience must have included leadwork or supervisory duties.

Equivalency Notes:

• A Master’s degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science or a closely-related Master’s degree in biological/ecological sciences will substitute for up to one year of the required experience.
• A Doctorate degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science or a closely-related Doctorate degree in biological/ecological sciences will substitute for up to two years of the required experience.

Desired Attributes

• Proven leadership and supervisory experience – Able to set priorities, support staff development, and ensure accountability.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills – Skilled in conflict resolution, public speaking, and building relationships across diverse groups.
• Commitment to Tribal engagement – Demonstrated ability to foster respectful, productive partnerships with Oregon’s federally recognized Tribes.
• Partnership-building expertise – Experience working with agencies, nonprofits, and community stakeholders (e.g., BLM, USFS, NOAA, local governments).
• Fisheries biology knowledge – Especially in hatchery management, harvest management, and habitat protection/restoration.
• Public engagement experience – Comfortable presenting to groups and using various media to share information.
• Technical proficiency – Familiarity with databases, GIS/mapping tools, statistical analysis, and budget tracking.
• Collaborative mindset – Experience contributing to agency planning, policy, and project proposals.

• The salary listed is the non-PERS qualifying salary range. If the successful candidate is PERS qualifying, the salary range will reflect an additional 6.95%
