Mission and objectives
As the United Nations lead agency on international development, UNDP works in 170 countries and territories to eradicate poverty and reduce inequality. We help countries to develop policies, leadership skills, partnering abilities, institutional capabilities, and to build resilience to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Our work is concentrated in three focus areas; sustainable development, democratic governance and peace building, and climate and disaster resilience.
Context
Afghanistan faces multiple challenges, with climate, peace, and development issue tightly interwoven. Afghanistan is a very diverse country–in terms of geography, economy, people. Thus, understanding of subnational, local conditions is crucial. Policy and Knowledge Management Unit (PKU) compiles available datasets for integrated analysis of local conditions. The Unit is preparing Regional Social Economic Outlooks, a flagship publication analyzing intersecting vulnerabilities for 8 regions of Afghanistan. You will support this work by preparing visualizations for analytical purposes using layered geo-referenced datasets. Some visualizations could include additional data for neighboring countries for transboundary issues, like water. Through this work you will learn about nexus approach, get practical skills in GIS, and understanding of Afghanistan (and broader Central Asia).
Task description
• Prepare set of maps for one of the regions of Afghanistan to illustrate intersecting vulnerabilities and interconnected development issues
• Discuss and revise the maps with PKU to ensure they relevance for users
• Prepare an agreed set of maps for the Regional Social Economic Outlooks for all 8 regions
