GENERAL SUMMARY

Works under the supervision of the Registered Nurse. The Surgical Technician II assists in patient care activities and performs Surgical Technician duties in the scrub role. Works to decontaminate instruments as needed. Assists the RN with circulating duties as appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalent High School Exam Required

Graduate of a Certified Surgical Technologist program required

Working knowledge of medical terminology required

Licensure:

CST or TS-C required

BLS within 90 days of hire required

Experience:

Operating Room scrub tech experience preferred.

Interpersonal Skills:

Personable, communication skills to facilitate communication with patients, staff, physicians, and other customers.

Essential Technical/Motor Skills:

Highly developed fine and gross motor skills to finely grasp and manipulate surgical instrumentation and supplies. Analytical skills necessary to organize and prepare operating room according to standard methods and procedures.

Essential Physical Requirements:

Standing for long periods of time with the ability to move and hold equipment and supplies. The physical demand level for this position is very heavy. Must occasionally lift and position patients when preparing patients for operative procedures.

Essential Mental Requirements:

Analytical skills to interpret and communicate data relative to patient care, procedure to be done, prioritizing, and organizing in an efficient manner.

Essential Sensory Requirements:

Must have good vision and hearing to communicate in an environment where individuals wear surgical masks and equipment sounds may interfere with communication.

Exposure to Hazards:

Works in sterile atmosphere with little exposure to excessive dust. Regular exposure to excessive noise and temperature. May be exposed to blood and body fluids and various communicable and infectious diseases, as well as cuts and scrapes from needles and sharp surgical instruments.

JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

  • Scrubs on all types of surgical procedures.
  • Identifies patient needs/physician preferences for surgical supplies, equipment and instruments, including updating physician preference lists.
  • Organizes activities to meet the surgery schedule.
  • Performs technical skills in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Performs “on-call” duties as required.
  • Assists with orientation of new employees, and acts as preceptor for new employees.
  • Decontaminates instruments and equipment as indicated. Inspects and identifies instruments in need of repair.
  • Assists staff members in locating instruments and equipment.
  • Assists in maintaining a clean and safe environment in the OR.
  • Contributes and fosters the team approach in all unit operations using positive interaction with customers.
  • Pre-cleans, decontaminates and transports contaminated instruments according to policy
  • Performs intermediate-level disinfection and/ or high level disinfection per the Instructions for Use (IFU) by the manufacture. This includes ensuring the scopes or probes used within the department are cleaned, disinfected, maintained and stored per the IFU’s
  • Performs tasks in other peri-operative areas as needed.
