Project Description

Regional Amazónica Ikiam University (URAI) in Ecuador has requested the support of a Peace Corps Response Volunteer (PCRV) to serve as a Sustainability and Climate Change Advisor. URAI aims to become a carbon neutral certifier in the short term to contribute to the new regulations on the access and use of carbon in the Amazon region, and baseline information will contribute to strengthening the carbon-sustainable approach inside and outside the university. URAI has identified a need for technical support for: (1) creating a management model towards a carbon credit certifier; (2) developing an automated system for the temporal-spatial analysis of greenhouse gas emissions including data management of satellite images, databases and GHG emission factors in the Guidelines of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

The PCRV will work alongside URAI staff to conduct a desktop review of the total set of greenhouses gases (CO2 equivalents, CO2e) that URAI is emitting during different activities. The PCRV will also carry out an analysis of carbon emissions and removal for each activity, including database management and spatial analysis.

Candidates selected for this position will be arriving in Ecuador together as a group, so while the departure dates for the whole group could change, dates cannot be changed for individual candidates.
