more. This new position, Sustainability Projects Manager, will have a key role in driving
forwards further improvement. The post holder will have responsibility for leading and managing
key projects including our circular economy, sustainable procurement and reporting. They will
work in collaboration with teams across the institution, bringing expert knowledge, innovation
and inspiration. The role is based at our low carbon and nature rich Avery Hill Campus,
although the role requires working periodically at all three campuses. You will be working with
a small and effective team, sitting within the Estates and Facilities Directorate and
delivering high impact sustainability improvement that contribute to our high rankings in a
number of national and global awards.

Purpose of the Role:

Reporting directly to the Sustainability Manager the post holder will assist with the promotion
and implementation of key elements of the university’s Sustainability Policy and forthcoming
Strategic Sustainability Action Plan. They will contribute to the effective management of the
university’s environmental impacts, raising awareness about and encouraging the adoption of
sustainability best practice opportunities across the university.

The key focus will be on the development, management and delivery of projects that will help
meet our sustainability and corporate KPIs. These projects will cover a broad range of areas
including, for example; the circular economy, sustainable procurement, reporting, data, living
labs and partnerships. They will be expected to assist with the implementation of other
initiatives e.g. environmental management system, education and research for sustainable
development and help maintain our sustainability excellence in areas such as the provision of
sustainable food. The university wants to make further improvements in its operations so is
seeking someone who is innovative and able to deliver successful projects that deliver positive
impact. The post holder must possess a broad knowledge of sustainability issues and a high
level of confidence in dealing with a wide range of university stakeholders.

Key Accountabilities

  • Work with and report to the Sustainability Manager and lead on the creation, development
    and delivery of institutionally strategic sustainability programmes. These will have high
    impact and will be aligned with the forthcoming Strategic Sustainability Action Plan, our
    Sustainability Policy and our corporate and sub strategies and will to contribute towards
    organisational change.
  • Collaborate with the Sustainable Development Unit team, Estates Directorate staff and other
    key university stakeholders to lead and manage projects that will emerge in response to needs
    and opportunities. The postholder will be expected to bring innovation and find ways to
    motivate and engage partners to deliver success.
  • Developing and maintaining systems for monitoring and delivering programmes and their
    supporting projects, including coordinating and managing resources to support with programme
    delivery, ensuring that projects are managed effectively, meeting outcomes on time, in budget
    and to quality standards.
  • Deliver specific programmes of work that deliver improvement. For example: delivery of a
    circular economy inspired waste management programme that creates alignments with sustainable
    procurement.
  • To create and enable partnerships to flourish that bring together our communities including
    external partners to deliver sustainability value. This will include managing our living labs
    initiatives and sustainable labs programmes
  • Work with the Sustainability Manager in the accurate collation and analysis of data,
    producing reports and information as appropriate.
  • Have responsibility for producing our Annual Sustainability Report and provide evidence for
    relevant league tables we contribute to.
  • Responsible for providing specialist advice and securing senior level commitment and
    support for sustainability projects, policies and initiatives, to include attendance at
    university committees and preparation of supporting papers. Represent the university on
    strategic external groups and networks, effectively presenting the university’s position in
    order to influence events and decisions.
  • Supporting communication and promoting awareness across the UoG population of staff,
    students and service providers to deliver cultural and behavioural change. Actively engage and
    liaise with stakeholders to promote the university’s sustainability plans, provide good
    practice advice and support the practical implementation of innovative ideas on campus.
  • Supporting UoG to meet its statutory and regulatory environmental obligations
  • Assist with the implementation and operation of the university’s Sustainability Management
    System to ISO14001 standard. Support the development, management and maintenance of appropriate
    environmental monitoring systems, surveys and audit processes and their incorporation into
    existing systems and procedures and records.
  • Undertake environmental audits and reviews to support the monitoring of the university’s
    management of significant environmental aspects & impacts.
  • Coordinate press and promotional initiatives in conjunction with the SDU’s Engagement
    Officer and the university’s communication team, and develop effective and impactful engagement
    programmes.
  • Provide expert sustainability advice for university contractors and review products with a
    sustainability impact where relevant.
  • Recruit and manage additional staff including student sustainability volunteers and
    interns.
  • Assist in the development and delivery of sustainability training for staff and students,
    e.g. new staff inductions, staff sustainability champions, departmental training, student
    lectures and workshops.
