The Center for Research in Biological Systems, at the University of California San Diego, is an organized research unit (ORU) that exists to provide human resources, high technology equipment, and administrative services to scientists researching cell structure and function relationships in central nervous system processes, cardiovascular networking, and muscular contraction through multiple scales and modalities. CRBS scientists investigate these processes through invention, refinement, and deployment of sophisticated technologies.

CRBS facilitates an interdisciplinary infrastructure in which people from biology, medicine, chemistry, and physics can work with those from computer science and information technologies in collaborative research. Researchers share interests in the study of complex biological systems at many scales, from the structures of enzymes, proteins, and the body’s chemical communications network at atomic and molecular levels, to an organism’s physiology, strength, and support at cellular and tissue levels.

Applies professional concepts and department and campus, medical center or Office of the President policies and procedures to resolve systems problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors. Performs routine work, with detailed instructions provided on new project and / or more complex assignments and initiatives. Within defined procedures and practices, determines appropriate action.

Under close supervision, this employee helps provide systems and network support for local and remote research facilities connected via high-performance public and private networks. These activities support ongoing projects for the Center for Research in Biological systems, including the National Center for Microscopy and Imaging Research (NCMIR) and project activities affiliated with Calit2 and the San Diego Supercomputer Center. Day to day responsibilities include assisting with the administration of local NCMIR resources and distributed resources (systems and desktop) within the CRBS facilities spanning the SOM, Calit2, SDSC, and networked resources of the National Research Platform (NRP). The Systems/Network Admin helps provide and maintain a robust, high-throughput, scalable and secure environment to facilitate the biomedical research goals of the scientist-users and support personnel associated with CRBS.
