The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity on our recreation team for a self-motivated professional to build and manage our new target shooting program. Under the general guidance of the Statewide Recreation Manager, the Statewide Target Shooting Program Manager will serve as the staff responsible for all functions of a new Statewide Target Shooting Program. The work involves developing and implementing processes and initiatives for DNR to provide consistent, safe, and environmentally responsible recreational target shooting access statewide, supporting DNR’s mission to protect resources while providing high-quality recreation opportunities. This position will supervise one highly skilled staff member and conduct intensive outreach with internal and external parties, including Tribes, elected officials, recreation partners, and the public.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in land use, regional, environmental, or natural resource planning, land use or environmental law, public administration, environmental studies, outdoor recreation, natural resource sciences, or a related field AND three years of relevant professional experience;
    OR An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
  • Advanced writing, verbal, and presentation communication skills including the ability to precisely and concisely present information to both technical and layman audiences.
  • Experience managing multiple complex tasks, setting work priorities for self and team, and completing tasks on time.
  • Experience speaking and writing clearly and succinctly to a variety of audiences.
  • Experience collaborating on complex and contentious issues in an active respectful, and cooperative manner.
  • Knowledge of:
    • Project management tools and techniques
    • Current trends in natural resource issues, environmental laws (including SEPA), policies, and programs.
    • Natural resources planning principles, methods, and techniques.
    • Social and other problems affecting the development of local and state environmental resources programs, department programs, and related laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering and supporting an environment that honors diversity, equity, inclusion, and environmental justice practices.
  • Perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations and public records retention and requests are followed.
  • Active listening skills as demonstrated by the ability to resolve conflicts; and receive and convey ideas, thoughts, and information to a variety of people and groups.
