Role Purpose

  • To promote and ensure quality teaching and effective learning of English.
  • The main focus on the role will be delivering face to face and online lessons to our learners in Myanmar.
  • To support the wider aims of British Council and its cultural relations mission.

Accountabilities

  • Plan and deliver high quality English language lessons which meets the needs of different customer groups, taking into account individual learning styles up to the number of contracted teaching hours
  • Monitor progress and provide regular feedback to help manage students performance throughout the course, and actively promote learner autonomy and sense of progress
  • Contribute to the development, evaluation, and improvement of English language courses, materials and related services, in order to meet students needs by actively working as a member of the teaching team
  • Complete teaching related administrative tasks to specified standards
  • Actively engage in professional development and performance management to ensure quality and high standards in teaching and learning, and maintain British Councils position at the forefront of best ELT practices
  • Contribute to the development of lasting, mutually beneficial relationships by enhancing students understanding of contemporary UK
  • Assist the teaching centre team in delivering excellent customer service and upholding British Council Values and Behaviours
  • Ensure safeguarding and guidelines are applied and upheld in line with standards and policy for the following areas:
    • Child protection
    • Equal Opportunity and Diversity
    • Health and safety

Qualifications

Essentials

  • Cambridge CELTA/ Trinity Cert TESOL
  • University degree

Desirables

  • Recognised diploma in EFL i.e., Cambridge DELTA/Trinity Dip TESOL
  • CELT-YL extension/TYLEC

Work Experience

Essentials

  • 2 years post-certificate (i.e., CELTA/Trinity cert TESOL) experience
  • Experience in teaching relevant age groups:
    • Primary aged 6 to 10 (800+ hours)
    • Lower Secondary aged 11 to 14 (800+ hours)
    • Upper Secondary aged 15 to 17 (800+ hours)
    • Adults (400+ hours)

Salary & Benefits

  • Salary: USD 1,305 + supplement (GBP 645), USD 1,711 + supplement (GBP 725) per month depending on experience
  • Duration: 24 months
  • Contract type: Fixed-term
  • Work duration: The working week is defined as any five consecutive days with a two-day weekend and 24 hours teaching delivery each week. Teachers are expected to work both Saturday and Sunday as they are our busiest teaching days. You will be given a weekend on Monday/Tuesday or Wednesday/Thursday. Working hours may involve regular evenings up to 9:45pm and may involve online delivery to our learners in Myanmar.
  • Accommodation allowance:
    • Unaccompanied employees or those with a partner (couple) receive a monthly accommodation allowance of USD400.
    • Accompanied employees with child(ren) receive an accommodation allowance of USD535 per calendar month.
  • Fair allowance: Flight costs will be sponsored for both your arrival and at the end of the fixed-term contract of employment with British Council Myanmar.
  • Baggage allowances:
    • Unaccompanied employees enjoy baggage allowances of up to 1,200.
    • Employees accompanied by family members receive baggage allowances of up to 2,000.
  • Settling-in allowance: Entitled to a settling-in allowance equivalent to two weeks salary for single employees, or three weeks salary for employees accompanied by family members, to help you to meet your initial expenses on first arrival in Myanmar.
  • Leave: Annual paid leaves is 35 days and 15 Public Holidays
  • Role requirement: The Myanmar teaching centre is located in Yangon. Young learner and adult classes are delivered across three centres in Yangon at the main office on Kanna Road, at Junction City, and at British School Yangon. Classes are also delivered online to our adult learners throughout the day and our YL learners in the evenings.

Additional Information

  • Proof of Identity requirements/right to work in the country
    • The post holder must have the right to work in Myanmar. In order to obtain a work visa from the Myanmar Immigration Department, expatriate post holders must have:
    • a university degree
    • recognised teaching qualification e.g.
    • Cambridge CELTA/Trinity Cert TESOL
    • at least two years teaching experience
  • Passport must be valid for a minimum of TWO years from employment start date and contain at least SIX consecutive blank pages for visa to be issued.
