Role Purpose:

  • To maintain and enhance professional development and academic quality in the teaching center, through the management of in-house teacher development programme and support
  • To promote and ensure quality teaching and effective learning of English
  • To provide learners with a rewarding and stimulating English language learning experience
  • To support the wider aims of British Council and its cultural relations mission

Job Overview

  • The British Council in Egypt offers programmes for both Adults and Young Learners and is a seven day a week operation offering classes throughout the day. Most teachers teach Young Learner classes at the weekend and Adult classes (primarily in the evening) on the other days. All teachers have two consecutive days as a weekend.
  • We currently have 4 branches in Cairo (Agouza, Heliopolis, Nasr City and 6 October City) and one in Alexandria. These are a mix of owned, rented and partnered premises.
  • Corporate courses are delivered both on-site and off-site.

Main Accountabilities:

  • Plan, prepare and deliver up to 25 hours of high-quality English Teaching that meets the needs of different customer groups taking into account individual learning styles.
  • Monitor progress and provide regular feedback to help manage students performance throughout the course, and actively promote learner autonomy
  • Contribute to the development, evaluation, and improvement of English language courses, materials and related services, in order to meet students needs by actively working as a member of the teaching team
  • Actively engage in professional development and performance management to ensure quality and high standards in teaching and learning and maintain British Councils position at the forefront of best ELT practices.
  • Contribute to the development of lasting, mutually beneficial relationships by enhancing students understanding of contemporary UK.
  • Ensure safeguarding and guidelines are applied and upheld in line with standards and policy for the following areas:
    • Child Protection
    • Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
    • Anti-bribery
    • Information management
    • Health and safety

Qualifications

Essentials

  • Undergraduate Degree (any discipline)
  • Cambridge CELTA or Trinity cert TESOL.
  • Language Requirement
  • High proficiency in English i.e. full mastery of English across all 4 skills equivalents to user (CEFR C2)

Work Experience

Essentials

  • 2 years post-certificate i.e. CELTA/Trinity cert TESOL experience
  • Experience in teaching relevant age groups:
    • Adults General English (800+ hours)
    • Young adults aged 5-17 (400+ hours

Desirable

  • EAP, ESP courses (400+ hours)

Local restrictions on employment

  • This opportunity is open to Egyptian and UK nationals. Work permits can only be obtained via the British Council for Egyptian and UK passport holders.
  • Applicants must have a passport that is valid for at least six months from the start date and have a minimum of 2 clear pages to obtain visas.

Salary & Benefits

  • 2-year Mobile Contract (recruited from the UK or British Council in the network) :The total salary is composed of 2 elements: a local salary + a sterling supplement Local salary (to be paid into local bank account) in monthly payments of 13,092 EGP and the sterling supplement is 315GBP
  • 2-year Local Contract (based in Egypt):Local salary (to be paid into local bank account) in monthly payments of 13,092 EGP

(Allowances payable to British passport holders from the UK or from another country on the network (Country Plus contract)

  • Housing allowance
    • We provide assistance towards the cost of finding rented accommodation:
    • Unaccompanied 4000
    • Accompanied (1 dependent) 5500 (Accountable)
    • Accompanied (2 or more dependents) 7500 (Accountable)
  • Settling-in allowance
    • The settling-in allowance is designed to support the employee for costs they may incur as a result of relocating. It is a contribution only and is not intended to necessarily cover all the cost of the move.
    • Employees will receive the allowance as a one-off net payment with their first months salary in the host country.
    • The allowance is 7% of the employees annual base salary if single and for accompanied 10% of base salary. If income tax is liable on the allowance in the host location the allowance will be grossed up.
  • Fares & Travel: Employees will be eligible for an economy class flight to the host location from their point of origin, in line with the British Council travel policy. Accompanying spouses and partners and children aged 21 years and under will also be provided with a flight. All flights must be booked via the designated travel provider.
    • An economy class flight for the employee and any accompanying dependants will be provided at the end of the contract back to the home location if the employment contract is fixed term for 12, 24 and for up to 36 months. The flight wont be provided for a contract period beyond 36 months+.The flights must be used within one month of the end of contract or will be forfeited. A cash equivalent will not be provided.
  • Settling-In Leave: Employees are provided with an additional 3 days settling-in leave on arrival at the host location. The leave should be taken within the first month of arrival.
  • Temporary Accommodation:Employees may be provided with temporary accommodation for up to two weeks upon arrival at the host location. If the accommodation is a hotel it should be booked via the designated travel provider in the new location. Hotel accommodation must be approved by the Country Director, or the senior line manager in the UK before booking.
  • Annual Leave Allowance: 35 days per annum paid leave plus public holidays (currently 14 days)
  • Medical Allowance:You and accompanying members of your family will be registered with the Councils Group Medical Insurance. The scheme is currently administered by Allianz. The scheme covers medical and hospital treatment, repatriation costs, personal liability and other items.
  • Job Opportunities for Partners :Job opportunities for partners are limited, the most common being work in language schools in Cairo and its satellite towns for those who have experience and/or qualifications in teaching. For other opportunities the Embassies and cultural centres are the best place to enquire about employment opportunities. The Cervantes Institute, The Centro Italiano, The Goethe Institut and the Alliance Francaise all operate in Cairo. The British Council cannot obtain work visas for spouses to enable work with other organisations.
  • Immigration & Visa Support :The British Council will provide immigration and visa support to the assignee (UK national) and their accompanying dependents for up to a maximum of five years in the host country. Applicants with unmarried partners will need to check whether their partners are able to reside in Egypt. The Egyptian authorities currently provide a short-term tourist visa requiring the individual to re-enter the country every three months. However, this is not available to all nationalities.
  • Other Allowances: British Council pays for visas, work permits, vaccinations required for employment.
