The competition for this position is justified by the need of teaching, by a full-time academic staff member, of the disciplines Basics of Analytical Chemistry (seminar and laboratory – discipline to Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering), BSc level, Analytical Chemistry (laboratory to Biochemistry and Industrial biotechnology, Faculty of Biology and Geology), BSc level, Analytical Quality Control of Organic Products (laboratory – discipline to Chemistry and Engineering of Organic Substances, Petrochemistry and Carbochemistry, Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering), BSc level, Analytical Chemistry – Instrumental Analysis (laboratory – discipline for Chemistry and Chemical engineering, Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering), BSc level.

Skills/Qualifications

The position involves to carry out experimental research activities in the field of chemistry in general, analytical chemistry, bioanalytical chemistry and instrumental methods applied in the quality control of organic compounds. Consequently, besides the theoretical knowledge required to carry out the teaching duties, the applicants for this position, with a BSc title in chemistry or chemical engineering, must have a PhD in chemistry (demonstrated by the subject of the PhD thesis), and research activity (scientific track record) in the above-mentioned field of experimental chemistry, experimental analytical chemistry and instrumental analysis, respectively.

Specific Requirements

The applicants to the teaching assistant position must fulfill the standards included in the Methodology for occupying free teaching or research positions by competition in Babeș-Bolyai University (see Metodologia de concurs pentru ocuparea posturilor didactice și de cercetare vacante în Universitatea “Babeș-Bolyai” modified in the BBU Senate meeting on the 11.04.2022, as well as HS (Senate Decision) no. 50/11.04.2022 – https://senat.ubbcluj.ro/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Anexa-la-HS-nr.-50-privind-modificarea-%C8%99i-completarea-Metodologiei-pentru-ocuparea-posturilor-didactice-%C8%99i-de-cercetare-vacante-din-UBB.pdf  ) regarding all the activities, criteria and indicators required to occupy this position, and the fulfillment of one of the following minimal alternative standards:

a) quality of author/co-author of a number of 4 scientific publications (articles/book

chapters/books), indexed in WoS/Scopus/ErihPlus (for articles) or published by national or

international prestigious publishing houses (for book chapters/books); for at least 2

publications the applicant has to be the main author;

b) quality of author/co-author of a publication in Science or Nature or main author of an

article in a journal included in the Top 10 of the field; as scientometric references the relative influence score of the article according to WoS – Journal Citation Report is used; the relative influence score refers to the publication year.

The internal Committee of the Faculty will exclude the applications which do not meet the

admissibility requirements.

The competences of the candidates will be evaluated based on the individual track record, of a written examination and an oral examination, as follows:

  • Evaluation of the individual track record.
  • Wednesday, 31 January 2024, at 08:30 – Written examination (2 hours), room 93
  • Wednesday, 31 January 2024, at 13:00 – Oral examination – – seminar and laboratory (~ 3 hours). This competition stage will include a short  presentation (max 0.5 hours) of a research project (plan of development of the academic career)
  • The topics for written examination:

  • Acid-base equilibrium in aqueous solutions (calculation of pH in solutions of acids, bases, salts, buffer solutions, calculation of concentrations at equilibrium and distribution diagrams, hydrolysis of salts, applications)
  • Acid-base titrimetry (calculation of the titration curve and the factors that influence it for the titration of weak acids/weak bases, polyprotic acids, salts with alkaline hydrolysis, indicating the end of the titration, applications)
  • Precipitation equilibrium (solubility calculation, chemical factors influencing solubility, applications)
  • Applications of volumetric methods in quality control of organic compounds.
  • Analysis by ultraviolet-visible molecular absorption spectrometry (principle and block diagram of the method, Lambert-Beer law and validity conditions, criteria for selecting the optimal wavelength, calibration curve, chemical and instrumental deviations, error curve. Applications).
  • Flame atomic absorption spectrometry analysis using line primary source (principle and block diagram of the method, source and monochromator requirements in atomic absorption, applications).
  • Voltammetry analysis (voltammetry instrumentation, block diagram of a voltammeter with dropping mercury electrode, supporting electrolyte, voltammogram characteristics, applications).
  • The topics for oral examination (seminar + laboratory, and practical work):

  • Permanganometric and bichromatometric determination of iron.
  • Preparation and determination of the factor of the 0.1N sodium thiosulfate  solution.
  • Determination of water hardness.
  • Determining the quality of ibuprofen. Dosing by acid-base titration.
  • Determination of the purity of synthetic food dyes by Vis molecular absorption spectrophotometry.
  • Determination of sodium nitrite from food samples by UV-Vis molecular absorption spectrometry. Sample preparation. Qualitative analysis.
  • Spectrophotometric determination of Fe by complexation with sulfosalicylic acid in acetic buffer. Selection of the optimal working conditions. Qualitative analysis.
  • Spectrophotometric determination of Fe by complexation with sulfosalicylic acid in acetic buffer. Selection of the optimal working conditions. Quantitative analysis. Calculation of molar absorptivity. Significance.
  • Determination of Li, Na, K, Ca and Mg from drinking and mineral water samples by flame atomic emission spectrometry using non-dispersive spectrometers with filters.
  • Potentiometric determination of the pH of beverages (water, wine, juices).
