Salary: UH6 £31,396pa to £33,966pa with potential to progress to £37,099pa by annual increments on achieving designated skills and experience

Annual Leave: 35 days plus standard public holidays and an additional 4 days including the closure of our office between Christmas and New Year

Location: College Lane Campus, Hatfield

School of Physics, Engineering and Computer Science (SPECS) are pleased to be able to offer these newly created roles, which have been introduced to support students in academic and pastoral processes.  These new posts are intended to enhance existing support the school has in place and replaces the current personal tutor system.

You will be one of a dedicated team of trained personal tutors who will manage the day-to-day work of supporting, advising and connecting students to the most appropriate service.  These roles will provide face to face and online support with a strong on-campus presence.

This role will work alongside the Programme Leader and module teams and preserves a named-contact relationship for students giving access to staff dedicated to and skilled in enhanced course and programme advice and guidance, wellbeing, and mental health, and professional and academic and study skills development.  The team will connect to the central support services as well as the school-based wellbeing and academic teams ensuring an ecosystem of support.

This new system further recognises that all staff involved in a student’s learning and teaching play a role in providing support during a student’s time in SPECS.  You will be part of the SPECS Academic Support Hub (SASH) team to support all taught students, both undergraduate and postgraduate.

Main duties and responsibilities

You will be expected to support students to fully engage with their programme and community to help them to succeed in their chosen subject, working closely with university and school academic and support staff.  Providing personalised support to students in academic and pastoral processes.

You will be the named point of contact for SPECS students within the SPECS Academic Support Hub (SASH) team, which provides a holistic consistent experience for all SPECS students throughout the academic year; you will also be allocated a group of students within our undergraduate or postgraduate programmes, ensuing that the students feel fully supported when they require help and are connected with the appropriate Programme Leaders, programme teams and service(s) as and when required.

The post will also require you to support the orientation and induction of new students at the University, and support student engagement activities within the University.  You will work closely with the Student Support Services, Academic and Wellbeing teams across the university, highlighting any issues at an early stage.

Additionally, you will act as a personal tutor to students, providing advice and support, and delivering some teaching as required.

Skill and experience required

You will be expected to have knowledge of and sensitivity to the complex areas of student support and good IT skills and the ability to maintain and develop related knowledge and skills as required for the position.

Excellent planning, organisational, time management skills, interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, and being proficient in English Language will also be required.  In addition to this you will have the ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team, deal with conflicting demands and priorities with high level attention to detail and handle sensitive material with strict confidentiality.

You will be flexible and adaptable to workload and student requirements, have a passion for providing excellent student experience and be committed in your approach to issues related to equality and diversity.

Qualifications required

You must hold a minimum of a degree, or equivalent level 6 qualification, in a relevant subject area or relevant proven experience.
