The Department of Mathematics is one of the largest in the UK, with around 900 undergraduate students, 225 MSc students and over 200 PhD students. Research in the department covers a very broad range of areas, organised within four sections: Applied Mathematics and Mathematical Physics; Mathematical Finance; Pure Mathematics; and Statistics. As one of the leading Mathematics Departments in the UK, the Department attracts talented students from around the UK and overseas.

The main purpose of the post is to champion outreach and public engagement within the Department of Mathematics. You will develop and deliver outreach projects in partnership with the College outreach team and the Imperial College London Mathematics School . You will also work to coordinate outreach and public engagement activities within the department, working with external (e.g. industrial) partners where necessary.

Duties and responsibilities

Your main duties will be: 

  • Prepare and deliver activities that introduce schoolchildren, teachers and members of the public to cutting-edge developments in Mathematics and its applications.
  • Take responsibility for co-ordinating outreach and public engagement activities within the department (including managing our online presence).
  • To contribute to the college’s educational mission through undergraduate teaching, personal tutoring and project supervision.
  • To promote equality, diversity and inclusion in the Department.

Essential requirements

For Teaching Fellow level:

  • A PhD or equivalent qualification in Mathematics (interpreted broadly) or related discipline/be nearing the completion of a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline.
  • A track record of mathematics outreach and public engagement.
  • Some previous experience of undergraduate mathematics teaching, along with the associated administrative work.
  • Knowledge of outreach objectives, opportunities, processes and activities.

 Additionally for Senior Teaching Fellow:

  • Experience leading and co-ordinating outreach and public engagement.
  • A track record of high-quality undergraduate mathematics teaching.

Further information

Teaching Fellow level salary: £51,417 – £58,345 per annum

Senior Teaching Fellow level salary: £60,855 – £72,071 per annum

This is a full time, open-ended position, based at South Kensington Campus.

Hybrid working may be considered for this role.  Staff working in roles that are suitable for hybrid working will normally be expected to work 60% of their time onsite. The opportunity for hybrid working will be discussed at interview.
