The Opportunity:

The Department of History at Washington State University (WSU) invites applications for a full-time, 9-month academic two-year term appointment as a postdoctoral teaching fellow position on the Pullman campus to teach the university’s core undergraduate course, “The Roots of Contemporary Issues” beginning August 16, 2024.

“The Roots of Contemporary Issues” is a history course that helps students make sense of our complex world by focusing on the deep historical roots of present-day issues in global perspective. WSU aims to provide students with the tools to address contemporary issues in a mature, reasoned way, using evidence, critical thinking, and clear written and oral communication skills. The course provides inquiry-based, active-learning experiences so that students learn not only content and skills, but also play a role in defining their own intellectual journey, by developing a 15-week research project on a topic of interest to them.

The History Department understands that postdoctoral teaching fellows are also active scholars. As a postdoctoral teaching fellow, you will be invited to participate in scholarly discussions and events within the department, including presenting your own work. You will also have access to funds to support your research and travel. The department offers active mentoring in teaching and research for all teaching fellows in the program.

You should provide evidence of a well-defined research agenda/program. As well as demonstrate your ability to understand historical problems in transnational, comparative, or global perspective and to engage students in discussions relating to the history of the environment, globalization, social inequalities, diverse ways of thinking, and world conflicts.

Job Duties:  You will teach a 4/4 load with one preparation. Your duties will be divided between teaching (80%) and research (20%) and does not include service expectations.  

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in History or closely related discipline at time of appointment.

  • Teaching experience and demonstrated commitment to educational equity.

  • Demonstrated ability to understand historical problems in transnational, comparative, or global perspective.

  • Demonstrated potential or ability to engage students in discussions relating to the history of the environment, globalization, social inequalities, diverse ways of thinking, and world conflicts.

  • Evidence of a well-defined research agenda/program.

Annual Salary: $42,000.00/academic year tendersglobal.net In accordance with RCW 49.58.110 , the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position. WSU offers a comprehensive benefits package which includes paid sick and vacation leave; paid holidays; medical, dental, life and disability insurance package for employees and dependents; retirement; deferred compensation and optional supplemental retirement accounts. This is a temporary position.
Temporary End Date: This is a temporary position expected to end on May 15, 2026. Renewal is dependent on the need for extension and/or if additional funding is secured to extend employment.
