UT Health San Antonio (UTHSA) is recruiting for an Open Rank faculty position, Non-Tenure Track, who will serve as the Technical Director for the Mass Spectrometry Core that is housed in the Department of Biochemistry and Structural Biology in the Joe. R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine. https://wp.uthscsa.edu/biochemistry/core-facilities/ ). This facility provides comprehensive support for biological mass spectrometry using state-of-the-art technologies. The role of the Technical Director will be to manage and participate in the day-to-day operations of the MS Core including discussions with clients and planning with institutional leaders. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work and grow in the highly collaborative environment of UTHSA and a faculty member of Biochemistry and Structural Biology Department. Education and Experience Requirements:

Ph.D. (preferred) or equivalent in bioanalytical chemistry, proteomics, or relevant subject area.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Maintain efficient proteomics workflows to conduct proteomics analyses for investigators at UTHSA and other institutions (academic, government, and industry).
  • Work as needed in parallel with laboratory technical staff to prepare samples, conduct MS analyses and process data.
  • Work closely with investigators to develop and support their projects from experimental design, sample preparation, data interpretation, and delivery of analyzed datasets (text and data tables) for manuscripts, presentations, and grant applications.
  • Provide technical guidance and problem solving solutions on proteomics experiments. 
  • Lead fundraising efforts to keep facilities, instrumentation, software and data analysis pipelines at the forefront of the field.

Required Skills:

  • Experience in mass spectrometry/proteomics with significant hands-on expertise in operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting nano liquid   chromatography-mass spectrometry instrumentation (e.g., Exploris 480, Lumos, Q Exactive).
  • Experience with a variety of established proteomic data analyses and bioinformatic tools.
  • Ability to assist with interpretation of data.
  • Experience with developing a business model for successful core facility operation.
  • Experience with writing grant applications and maintaining core budgets and finances.
  • Strong multi-tasking, time management, organizational skills and excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Proven ability to lead by example with honesty, integrity, flexibility, creativity, and collaborative spirit thereby building and maintaining successful   teams.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and/or tasks in a fast-paced environment.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with lipidomics, metabolomics, and/or multi-omic data set integration.
  • Experience with establishing automated lab processes.
  • Experience with commercial proteomics software, including Mascot, Scaffold, and/or Spectronaut.
  • Experience with programming such as R or Python.
