The Department of Noncommunicable Diseases (NCD) is responsible for global leadership, coordination, guidance and technical support to reduce premature mortality and morbidity from NCDs, burden of sensory impairments and oral health through prevention and integrated service delivery, treatment, surveillance, rehabilitation, monitoring and research. The Department also leads WHO’s work on disability. The Department provides overall coordination and brings together the work on NCD prevention, control and rehabilitation from across the departments and from the three levels of the organization. It coordinates reports to the WHO and UN governing bodies and is the main interlocutor on NCDs. The Department supports the collection, analysis, and dissemination of country-level NCD data and information to inform and improve public health policy.

The Department assists and supports regions and countries in their efforts to provide a country-centred, concerted and coordinated action to strengthen health systems to respond to NCDs, oral diseases and sensory impairment. The Department also ensure linkages between primary and secondary prevention using technical packages and harnessing innovation and use of technology including Be Healthy Be Mobile.

Description Of Duties:
Work with the Technical Lead of the Vision and Eye Care Programme to:

  • Support the implementation of the Eye Care in Health Systems – Guide for action.
  • Support the coordination of the WHO SPECS 2030 Initiative.
  • Support monitoring and evaluation activities for eye care.
  • Maintain and update SharePoint and other governance-related documentation.

Required Qualifications:
Education:

  • Essential: First university degree in one of the specialties of eye care, such as ophthalmology, optometry or orthoptics
  • Desirable: Advanced University degree in public health, epidemiology, or related field.

Experience:

  • Essential: Minimum 2 years of experience in eye care with such as ophthalmology, optometry or orthoptics. Knowledge and experience in public health.
  • Desirable: Working experience in low and middle-income countries.

  • Solid knowledge and experience in public health.
  • A high level of motivation, initiative, flexibility and a sense of responsibility.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess scientific evidence and compile written documents in a clear and concise manner. 
  • Good presentation skills.
  • Results-oriented.

Use of Language Skills:

  • Essential: Expert knowledge of English.
  • Desirable: Intermediate knowledge of French.
