The Organisation

First Peoples with disability and their families are amongst the most seriously disadvantaged and disempowered members of the Australian community. Governed by First Peoples with lived experience of disability, the First Peoples Disability Network Australia (FPDN) is an organisation of and for Australia’s First Peoples, their families, and communities.

FPDN proactively engages with communities around Australia and individuals internationally, advocating for the recognition, respect, protection and fulfilment of their human rights. Established informally in 2010, the founders are the leaders of the Aboriginal disability movement who have been working to uphold the rights of their people since the 1960s.

The Role

Reporting to the National Communications Manager in this newly created role, you will be an integral part of the communications team, delivering on technical projects and enhancements across FPDN’s online and digital presence.

Utilising your sound full stack programming and developing principles, combined with your understanding of website features which support accessibility for people with a disability, you will enhance and maintain continuous improvement of FPDN’s online offering.

Specifically, you will:

  • Design and implement new online and accessibility features
  • Map and make recommendations based on user journeys
  • Manage relationships and projects with outsourced IT providers
  • Write code and ensure software compliance with coding standards
  • Identify and resolve any issues in development, test and production

Skills Required

With unwavering focus on social equality for First Peoples with a disability, you bring a passion for developing and producing accessible digital tools and resources, whilst managing multiple technical projects.

You will be Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1) qualified or willing to undertake this training and have a tertiary degree in Computer Science or a related discipline.

You’ll possess strong analytical, research and reasoning capacities and be well versed in troubleshooting and problem-solving as part of a small team.

Having lived experience of a disability would be desirable.
