Focusing on five countries – Nepal, Kenya, Tanzania, Madagascar and Bolivia – the Scaling up Equitable Governance Project will scale up action for more equitable governance of Protected and Conserved Areas, building capacity and enabling conditions to ensure equitable governance becomes a cornerstone of conservation policy and practice.
We are now seeking a Technical Support and Research Officer to join the IIED Team on this project on a full-time or part-time, permanent basis.

This is an exceptional opportunity for an international conservation/development professional with experience working on governance, equity and human rights in natural resource management and/or nature conservation to join our global organisation.
The Role
As a Technical Support and Research Officer, you will provide technical support to our NGO partners in each country to:
1. Facilitate the assessment of governance and equity of protected and conserved areas (PCAs) by site level actors using our SAGE tool.
2. Provide technical support to site-level actors to plan and implement actions to improve PCA governance and equity.
3. Develop and test additional tools and modifications to improve SAGE.
4. Develop and deliver training modules to build knowledge and skills of conservation practitioners and site-level actors to improve PCA governance and equity.
5. Facilitate a PCA governance community of practice at national level for peer-peer learning between conservation practitioners in government, NGOs and community-based organisations.
About You
To be considered as a Technical Support and Research Officer, you will need:
– Excellent understanding of issues related to equity, governance, IP&LCs, and rights based approaches in conservation and natural resource management (NRM)
– Experience working on community-based approaches to nature conservation/NRM
– Experience of working in developing countries, including in remote rural areas
– Experience working with international partners to deliver complex projects
– Good working knowledge of either French or Spanish will be an advantage
The closing date for this role is 31st May 2024. Interviews of shortlisted candidates will be held on Monday June 17th. As part of the interview process, shortlisted candidates will be expected to prepare a presentation.
IIED is a hybrid working organisation and you are likely to be working from home most of the time. As such, you will need a suitable place to work and a reliable, fast internet connection.
This role is also open to those who live outside the UK, as long as you have the right to work in the country you wish to reside in and the time difference between your country and GMT/UTC does not exceed six hours.
The salary range advertised in GBP is applicable in the UK only, and the salary offer in another country would depend on the local terms and conditions. We only use the UK salary structure to determine starting salaries, but it will not apply to salaries outside the UK thereafter.
