Position Summary:

Seed corn maggot (SCM) is a generalist pest of several crops in NY. It damages germinating seed, causing significant crop stand losses. Preventive seed treatments will soon not be available requiring the development of accurate predictive tools. We will create a next generation risk assessment model for better and more precise prediction of SCM. We are recruiting a technician to join our team to assist in the lab and in the field to understand how cover crops and other local management practices affect seedcorn maggot in corn fields in New York State.

The technician will assist the PI, Katja Poveda, postdocs and graduate students performing field and lab research with an emphasis on intake of samples coming from the field, identification of maggots in seed samples, entering of data into datasets.

Primary duties for this project will include data intake, identification of maggots in seed samples, and data entering and organization. In addition, the candidate is expected to assist with greenhouse and field experiments and to manage the orders and equipment in the lab. The ideal candidate is very careful and detailed with data entry and has experience identifying seedcorn maggot adults and larvae.

This is an initial four month position with possible extending depending on laboratory funding and candidate performance.

Required Qualifications:

  • At least one year formal training beyond a high school diploma.
  • At least one year’s experience in the conduct of laboratory, greenhouse and field experimentation in agricultural science or a related field.
  • Basic knowledge of computer applications including Microsoft Word & Excel.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid and unrestricted New York State driver license
  • Ability to create an inclusive high quality and respectful work environment both in a team setting and independently to achieve lab, departmental and university goals.
  • Must be personable, flexible, proactive, and possess excellent organizational and communication skills, and take pride in work.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff and grower cooperators.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize multiple tasks, and work independently or as part of a team.
  • Visual concentration, attention to detail and manual dexterity.
  • Demonstrated effective listening skills, sound judgment, reasoning and decision-making skills, high-standard of record keeping.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with seedcorn maggot identification and have a B.S in Biology of similar field.
