This is a temporary full-time position working 40 hours per week with a salary of $25 per hour.
Position Summary
Under general direction of the PI, the technician will provide support for laboratory research. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Culturing and analysis of bacteria and other microorganisms
• Molecular Biology techniques including qPCR, PCR, and DNA/RNA extraction.
• Maintenance of mouse colonies
• Set-up, operate, and arrange for maintenance of laboratory equipment.
• Coordinate undergraduate student assistance with these and related tasks.
• Ensure that less-experienced lab personnel adhere to safety protocols and ensure that lab waste disposal adheres to protocols.
• Maintain orderliness of main research lab.
• Order and maintain common laboratory supplies.
• Maintain lab research databases and laboratory records.
• Perform data entry and summarize data in collections using computer spreadsheets and technical software.
• May contribute data findings for inclusion in reports or articles as requested.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or other formal training program of 2 years or equivalent; more than 3 years experience or equivalent combination. Attention to detail and order, manual dexterity, and ability to multi-task are required. Must possess excellent organizational and communication skills; be personable, flexible, and proactive; and take pride in their work. Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, faculty and staff. Must have good knowledge of basic laboratory instruments and safety protocols and guidelines. Knowledge of and experience with computer programs including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Must be willing to learn new laboratory skills. Must be able to work independently as well as in a team environment to accomplish required tasks. Ability to work with hazardous chemicals and biohazards and to adhere to lab safety protocols and procedures. Ability to regularly lift 20-50 pounds. Must have and maintain a valid and unrestricted NYS driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree with a major in biological sciences, environmental sciences, or similar field. 2-4 years of field and laboratory experience. Experience with qPCR, PCR, DNA extraction, anaerobic growth chambers for microbial culturing. Proficient in or familiar with basic mouse husbandry techniques and strategies.
