This is a local recruitment. Only Lao nationals, individuals with residence status or the appropriate employment visa for Lao PDR are eligible to apply. The remuneration and benefits package for this position is established with reference to the local labour market and in line with the IUCN conditions of service for Lao PDR.

The Project Communication officer of the Gibbon and People in Harmony project is to deliver the project objectives listed below here. Specifically, the communication officer will be responsible for developing communication materials incl. the development of a website, social media page and quarterly newsletters.

The position’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Duties: 

  • Work closely with your line manager in developing your draft work plan/concept note and travel plans.
  • Maintain PHP NPA website and social media sites (Facebook, Twitter and YouTube) such as
  • daily monitoring, posting and content development.
  • Compile, organize and manage all knowledge products and information on PHP NPA by developing and maintaining an archive database online and a library with lao-language resources. The library will be accessible on the website.
  • Translating project outputs / communication materials from English to Lao and vice versa as required.
  • Design and develop an annual report/ and a quarterly newsletter by consolidating information and data on activities, results and achievements on the project.
  • Develop some knowledge, information, and education materials from e.g. research results of PHP NPA, for the use of nature-based tourism marketing purposes and or community outreach and awareness.
  • Assist in organizing Community outreach campaigns and events. E.g. Annual Guardian Village festival or other relevant annual day World Environmental day, World Wildlife day, tree planting day.
  • Assist/support delivery of appropriate messages about environmental issues with the project outreach team; “local wildlife’s global and regional status and ecology; links between ecosystem protection and sustainable livelihoods; and national laws about hunting regulations, through mixed media including dance, song, story, dramatic play, movie and film, games and presentations, concise and strategically located interpretive signage, local/ national/ international media (print, radio and television)” as required. Mainly in designing / developing of outreach and awareness materials.
  • The Communications Officer will have to work closely with all IUCN program officers on a daily basis. He/She will maintain close interaction with communications and program staff of the IUCN network, and with entities associated with communications and conservation work within and outside the government, including the local media and conservation partners.
  • Develop and maintain contact information, materials and relationships with journalists and media outlets (print, TV, radio, web etc.) within and outside of Phou Hin Poun NPA to increase coverage of conservation issues in the media (print, broadcast and digital). Specific activities may include:
  • Draft and edit articles, press releases.
  • Collaborate with the media by organizing project site visits, facilitate photo coverage and TV footage and
  • utilizing both web-based and traditional media as appropriate.
  • Coordinate with the Senior Communications and Outreach Officer (Viet Nam Country Office) and the Stakeholder Engagement and Communications Officer (Asia Regional Office) for editorial feedback and clearance before disseminating communications content to external stakeholders.

Duties:

  • Carry out any other duties you may be called upon to perform from time to time by the country office and programme/projects. Such as supporting/ assisting organization of workshops, seminars, campaigns, events and project review meetings including agendas and meeting minutes when required.

Requirements:

General experience:

  • The Project Communication Officer will have at least 5 years of relevant experience in communications and/or (social) media content creation for the private sector, freelance or for international development/ donor projects, with qualifications in website design and IT. The candidate shall have excellent organizational, verbal and written communication skills, and experience in working effectively in a multicultural environment.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, IT or a related field.

Specific:

Skills and experience in:

  • Excellent written and oral English communication skills and Lao language are required.
  • Candidate should be able to work independently – with minimum supervision and guidance from supervisors.
  • Designing visually appealing and navigation friendly web sites;
  • Familiarity and relevant experience in using different Content Management Systems (CMS), particularly WordPress or similar.
  • Have a broad knowledge of current web development technologies and design tools in the field, and new software and other web programming languages and programs including use of HTML, XHTML, CSS, XML, XSLT, Macromedia Flash, Java;
  • Have basic/good knowledge of recent trends in graphic design, web sites, including online video publishing, and social media networking;
  • He/she should have advanced working knowledge of MS Office (Word, Powerpoint, Excel and Publisher).
  • Candidates with design and layout skills and adept in using Adobe Photoshop and Pagemaker, and video editing software are an added advantage.
  • Demonstrated and extensive social media experience is an added advantage.
  • Background in nature conservation and/or environmental project/work is an added advantage.
