Tenure Track Assistant Professor Marine organic carbon cycle (0.8-1 fte)

tendersglobal.net

We have an opening for an Assistant Professor to strengthen our position in marine organic carbon cycle research

The oceans play a crucial role in the global carbon cycle, containing by far the largest reservoir of active carbon on Earth. Terrestrial carbon (organic as well as inorganic) enters the oceans and carbon is exchanged with the atmosphere. This dynamical equilibrium is currently disturbed by anthropogenic carbon emissions, with strong repercussions for climate change. Of the anthropogenic CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, over 25% is taken up by the oceans. Organic matter plays a crucial role in governing the marine carbon cycle. There is urgent need for an improved (quantitative) understanding of the oceanic carbon cycle and climate feedbacks to this cycle. The present position aims to advance research on the marine organic carbon cycle, and its main players, drivers and interactions with climate. The rather recent embedding of the Ocean Group in the Centre for Isotope Research (CIO) leads to extensive possibilities to apply stable isotope techniques (and radiocarbon).

As Assistant Professor with a focus on research you will:

  • set up and develop your own research line and research group
  • teach in and contribute to the development of the master degree programs Marine Biology and Energy and Environmental Science
  • supervise PhD students
  • acquire external funding
  • promote the societal relevance of your research
  • contribute to the organization of the faculty, for example by participating in working groups and committees

and:

We encourage you to apply if you have:

  • a PhD degree in biological oceanography or a related field
  • excellent research qualities, as shown by a publication record in international peer-reviewed journals and proceedings of renowned conferences and a research statement
  • a great affinity with and a good track record in teaching, appropriate for the career stage
  • preferably at least two years of postdoctoral experience outside of the Netherlands
  • a relevant international network
  • the potential to acquire substantial research grants from external sources
  • demonstrable communicative and organizational competences
  • the ambition and the potential to develop academically
  • the ability to work well with others in international and diverse teams
  • good command of spoken and written English.

Furthermore, we expect all new staff members to either have a University Teaching Qualification (Dutch: Basiskwalificatie Onderwijs) or obtain it within 3 years and, if they do not already speak it, to learn the Dutch language within at most five years.

Contrary to what the above list might suggest, we don’t expect perfection in our candidates – if you think you have what it takes, but don’t meet every point above, please don’t hesitate to apply!
