The video reporter is responsible for creating one 1 – 3 minute-long video story each week. The stories should pertain to UAA and will likely fall into one of the following sections: news, arts and entertainment, features or opinion. They are expected to cover all sections as needed.
Video reporters find interesting and newsworthy stories that lend themselves well to video storytelling. They research, conduct interviews, attend events and collect sound and video to use in their projects. Also, they collect photos and/or create graphics to be used with publishing.
Stories and projects created by the video reporter will appear on The Northern Light’s website and social media. They work with other staff on the paper to prepare, develop and repackage content for use in other mediums.
The video reporter is under the multimedia editor. Video reporters are responsible for following the The Northern Light editing process, which includes following the Associated Press style as closely as possible. They are responsible for completing edits, submitting drafts and final projects by deadlines and are expected to attend pitch meetings to discuss stories. They work with other members of the multimedia team to assist with multimedia projects.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
• Have creative ability in video production.
• Ability to work on deadlines and work cooperatively with others.
• Ability to prepare, develop, and/or repackage features content for use in other media.
• Proficiency with Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, iMovie, Clipchamp or other video and
image editing software.
• Possess familiarity with word processors, Google Drive, and Windows and Macintosh
computers.
• Ability to present news in a balanced and unbiased way.
Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
• College level courses in journalism and public communications.
• College level courses in video production.
• Experience working on a publication or doing video production.

Minimum Qualifications:
To be eligible for student employment, an applicant must:
a. Be enrolled in the University of Alaska system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment; or
b. Have been enrolled the preceding semester for six or more credit hours and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester for employment between semesters; and
c. Have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA), be in good academic standing, or have approval from the MAU Senior Student Services officer or his/her designee.
d. Students enrolled in non-traditional programs of study will be considered eligible for student employment with the approval of the Senior Student Services officer.
e. An applicant must provide evidence of enrollment as outlined above to substantiate employment eligibility.
Position Details:
This is a part-time, up to 20 hours a week, student position paying $12.03/hour.
